There is much talk of Nvidia's opportunities, so one needs to balance it with a study of risks. Has this company been caught in a stock exchange bubble? 🤔 Beyond financial indicators, one should look at the underlying 𝑖𝑛𝑑𝑢𝑠𝑡𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑙 indicators, too (a listed company produces and sells products and services, after all). The point is this: Nvidia's splendid growth is connected, as far as I can observe, to a very 𝑛𝑖𝑐ℎ𝑒 market: the processing units ("brains") it sells to data centers. The latter are racing to expand their facilities, because they are boosted by the demand deep neural networks, which are very computer-intensive. My list of risks: 1️⃣ 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘃𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆: Nvidia's growth is connected to a very restricted consumer base: industrial companies that, for size of their facilities, workforce required, and huge capital requirements, are the 21st-century equivalent of 𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑒𝑙 𝑤𝑜𝑟𝑘𝑠 and shipyards of the 20th. That's a lot of eggs in one basket. 2️⃣ 𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘂𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: certainly, Nvidia's hardware processing units are optimized, but the software computations performed by the data centers that use them are not. As mentioned above, AI technology is impeded by its slowness and gargantuan energy consumption, i.e. they are currently tremendously 𝗶𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁 (efficiency is the proportion of work done, over energy input). That makes it especially vulnerable to increases of energy costs and shortages, for whatever reasons (environmental change, economy, or war). 3️⃣ 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿-𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: deep networks will provide changes in the industry, but mostly in the transport industry. However, for the moment, it is not proven that they will really change paradigms in the services industry (apology to some evangelists; but as things stand, it could have niche applications for a bank or a insurance such as marketing research or compliance, but it is unclear how it could change their paradigm in any way, shape or form). 4️⃣ 𝗟𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆: Once again this has not to do with Nvidia's products, but their target market: AI technology. Mathematically, the technology of neural networks is primitive and crude (they kind of "work" but no one really knows yet how to introspect them). As an indicator observable by anyone, ChatGPT's quality is going down: it gives increasing disappointments to users (I am going back more and more often to using search engines, since it's faster and sometimes better). 5️⃣ 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗼𝗯𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀𝗰𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: This is not connected to NVidia's technology, but above points 1 to 4. As things stands, we have diminishing returns on building bigger data centers, and physical limits. What if a new technology appears and sends the house of cards tumbling down... as Intel did with microchips in the 1970s, inaugurating a massive decentralisation and democratisation? Food for thought...
