Growing up in Chattanooga, Charlie Milburn, Brand Communications Planning Manager at BlueCross, didn’t know anyone with Down Syndrome. That changed in 2011 when he became a father. Now, Charlie advocates for his 2 children with the condition by not letting their diagnosis define them. "When you refer to someone as their diagnosis, you’re unconsciously taking away who they actually are," Charlie said. "When I talk about my daughter Lila, I say, 'This is my daughter, Lila. She loves musical theater. She’s a great dancer. She knows the full catalog of ABBA backwards and forwards because she’s obsessed with Mamma Mia. And oh, by the way, she has Down Syndrome.'" Charlie believes that a Down Syndrome diagnosis is just one part of a happy and healthy life. That outlook translates to his work managing a team that works with Medicare, BlueCare and Dual Special Needs Plan (DSNP) member materials. "Any sort of materials that I’m working on, I’m looking at it from the perspective of making sure it’s approachable for all our members," Charlie said. "That’s a perspective that may not have been there otherwise, and I see it as my role in a lot of ways to provide it." We’re thankful for employees like Charlie, who help us bring their valuable experiences and perspectives to customer care and advocacy. #WeAreBCBST
