We all want to access healthcare when we need it, feel seen and heard by our providers, and know that we can cover the bill. Yet discriminatory policies and practices place healthcare out of reach for some of us based on race, income, or geography. RWJF is working with partners to build a fair and just healthcare system that is accessible and affordable for all, a system that rectifies the harms it has caused in the past and prevents future harm by treating everyone with dignity and respect. We're grateful to partner with organizations that are building a healthcare system that serves all of us. From diversifying the health professions, to advocating for people in need of coverage, to providing safe birthing experiences for Black women, these partners are renewing hope in healthcare and working toward a future where health is no longer a privilege but a right. 🟡 Georgia Budget and Policy Institute amplifies the voices of people in Georgia living in the healthcare coverage gap. https://lnkd.in/eQRXruNZ 🟡The Indigenous Health, Education, and Resources Taskforce (IHEART) fosters Indigenous led, culturally responsive networks to address the scarcity of American Indian and Alaska Native communities in the health professions. https://lnkd.in/eYbUzpNN 🟡Ancient Song and Commonsense Childbirth Inc. works to ensure equitable maternal health care. https://rwjf.ws/e5vGLG 🟡Well-being and Equity (WE) in the World has launched Just Leaders for a Just Health System (JUSTICE SQUARED), which will take teams of healthcare organizations, patients, and community leaders on a guided journey to confront structural racism in healthcare together. https://lnkd.in/dmWNEBis To create a healthcare system free of barriers and inequities, it takes committed leaders within the system, sharing power with communities that have experienced these inequities firsthand. Advancements in research and technology have helped us better understand the underlying causes of health disparities and emphasize the necessity of health equity initiatives. Now, it’s time that we leverage technology and data to empower health systems to transform the way we practice and deliver care to lessen those disparities. As we work towards equality, we also must recognize the distrust that some communities have in the healthcare system. In my role as a board member for the Boston-based federally qualified health center Fenway Health, which delivers equitable, accessible healthcare to underserved communities, I've learned this: Diversifying healthcare providers and their teams is one step we can take to increase representation. In turn, communities that see people like themselves may be more comfortable engaging in care. Think of the impact from actions that help just one person get the care they need.

We recently added a new company to our health portfolio with an investment in Zócalo Health. Zócalo is a digital healthcare platform that provides Latinos with culturally competent and community-oriented care. Nearly 1-in-5 Latinos are uninsured and 58% say they prefer a Spanish speaking doctor. Co-founders Erik Cardenas and Mariza H. started Zócalo to give the Latino community simpler access to healthcare. The start-up provides patients access to primary care, behavioral health, social services, care coordination, complex care management, and urgent care. The company uses community health workers to engage and build trust with Latino patients and help Medicaid payors—31.4% of Medicaid beneficiaries nationwide identify as Hispanic—better serve a large and underserved demographic. At Acumen America, we are always looking for companies with a specific focus on impact. Zócalo’s vision aligns with our goals to increase access to healthcare for a growing and historically marginalized population by leveraging tech-enabled solutions with a community focus. Zócalo currently operates in Texas, California, and Washington and is looking to expand to more states. Learn more about Zócalo at: https://www.zocalo.health/

Breaking Barriers in Clinical Research Education: Addressing Inequities in Autoimmune Care The article on WellTheory highlights critical disparities in autoimmune healthcare, especially for women of color and Hispanic/Latino communities. Like WellTheory, our mission at Clinical Research Learning Network is to break down barriers—by providing accessible, educational resources to underrepresented populations. Understanding the unique challenges these communities face allows us to create bespoke learning platforms that empower both patients and clinical site staff to foster equitable, inclusive care. Together, we can drive progress in health equity through education. The Ubuntu Center on Racism, Global Movements, and Population Health Equity at the Drexel University Dornsife School of Public Health has been selected to lead a groundbreaking $6 million project funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). This significant grant puts the needs, ideas, and voices of the community at the forefront to address deep-rooted structural racism within the healthcare industry and advance equity and justice in healthcare systems. "This funding represents a pivotal moment in our collective efforts to dismantle structural racism within healthcare and advance population health equity,” says Sharrelle Barber, ScD, an assistant professor at the Dornsife School of Public Health and director of The Ubuntu Center. “This project allows us to engage in a community-centered process in regions across the country that honors the expertise and lived experiences of those most impacted by structural racism with hopes of creating a more equitable and just healthcare system for everyone." We know trust plays an important role in a functional society. But what happens when that trust is eroded? And how do you fix it? My colleague Nikhil Bumb recently spoke at FORTUNE Brainstorm Health on opportunities to rebuild trust in the system by bringing in historically marginalized voices into the process, to re-think and align incentives to prioritize patient-first care, and to learn from community-led approaches that are creating more inclusive and community-centered care systems outside the U.S. https://lnkd.in/gHX_vMQP
