Exploring New Frontiers in Research: A Journey into Children's Palliative Care In 2022, I ventured into a new and deeply compelling area of research, transitioning from sexual and reproductive health to the field of Children’s Palliative Care (CPC). It was a significant pivot—challenging yet immensely rewarding. Tackling complex and nuanced topics has always inspired me, and this experience has been no exception. Coming from an ethnic minority background in the UK, I was particularly interested in understanding how families from ethnic minority communities experience and engage with CPC services. Earlier this year, we had an insightful publication examining the experiences of ethnic minority families of CPC across developed countries. It sheds light on this often-overlooked population in CPC research and highlights these families' unique challenges. Addressing Maternal Overdoses in Montana The opioid crisis is severely impacting pregnant women. Since 1999, the opioid mortality rate among women has surged by over 500%, with opioid use disorder more than quadrupling. Unintentional drug overdose has become a leading cause of death among pregnant and postpartum women. Despite these alarming statistics, only 6% of Montana’s SUD facilities have programs for pregnant and postpartum women. At SIM-MT, we’re stepping up to address this gap with lifesaving training programs. The Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) project by SSPA/ PPHI Sindh, officially named the Mother and Child Support Program, aims to enhance maternal and child health services in Sindh. Launched in 2021 in Tharparkar and Umerkot, now working in 15 Districts of sind. it incentivizes health check-ups for pregnant women and immunizations for children up to two years old. Program focuses on improving healthcare accessibility and promoting behavioral change among communities.

Empowering Communities: A Midwife’s Mission to Reduce Race-Based Health Inequalities in Maternity Care 💙 Meet Gemma Poole, a registered midwife and CEO of both The Essential Baby Company Ltd and The Essential Baby Co in the Community CIC. She is also the Patient and Public Lead for Deep Medical, a Core 20+5 Ambassador, a Maternity User Researcher, and an Ambassador for the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme. Gemma is a lifelong advocate for vulnerable and underserved communities. Frustrated by inadequate and exclusionary antenatal care, she has taken action by creating accessible environments. Gemma develops, distributes, and delivers co-produced inclusive tools to educate, inform, and advocate for underrepresented communities and healthcare professionals. Her ultimate goal is to ensure safer pregnancies and healthier outcomes for everyone, regardless of skin tone, language, education, living status, or economics. Through the “First Step to Health” program 🩺, we equipped 40 general practitioner facilities in disadvantaged areas and this has led to a significant increase in the number of pregnant women and children up to the age of five consulting a doctor. The remarkable results include: ✅ 19% increase in the number of pregnant women attending prenatal healthcare services; ✅ 21% increase in the number of consultations, almost four times the national average; ✅ 20% increase in the number of children under five who were consulted by doctor in the last year.
