Let's engage minds, not just 'eyeballs'. My monthly column in The Media Leader UK previews the next stage of the 'Advertising: Who Cares?' movement. There is an awful lot of great thinking in our industry but it is not stopping the relentless slide towards a first-party data-led approach (powered by AI) that leads to a 'chuck it out there' approach. 'Spray and pray' seems to be the industry's default mode these days. Advertising in all channels is improved by intelligent creative and media thinking, based on insights, not just what the data may or may not tell us, especially when so much of it is unreliable and there is so much distortion through fraud etc. With so much 'crap' thrown out there (as described by our panel of young people), being distinctive and selective is the only way to stand out. The answer? Be more Madison Avenue, less Silicon Valley, and use intelligent creativity through the advertising process to influence people, not just reach them. And make the ad industry a better place to be. How? More on this soon, but we're testing our approach with our supporters next week, so if you're interested in expressing a view, join us on our link in comments below.
