Haiti's tumultuous past is marked by a persistent struggle against political instability, driven by deep-rooted issues like poverty, corruption, and weak governance structures. Over the years, the nation has weathered numerous coup d'états, dictatorships, and periods of intense political turmoil, exacerbating existing social and economic challenges and causing widespread suffering among its people. But the challenges facing Haiti extend beyond political strife. The country is also highly susceptible to natural disasters, including hurricanes, earthquakes, and flooding. The 2010 earthquake, in particular, wreaked havoc on the capital city of Port-au-Prince and its surroundings, ranking among the deadliest natural disasters in recorded history. Its aftermath saw significant loss of life, the displacement of millions, and extensive infrastructure damage. However, amidst the adversity, Haiti's resilience shines through. Understanding the underlying causes of its political conflict and vulnerability to natural disasters is paramount for paving the way towards sustainable development and lasting peace. Join us as we engage with the US Non-Profit Alleluia Tribe, delving into their experiences in Haiti and exploring their strategies for moving forward in the face of these formidable challenges.

Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil) faces the state's worst climate tragedy. This is very sad news about my country and any kind of help is important at this difficult time. I’m from South Brazil, where all this is happening and breaks my heart to see this tragedy from far away but at the same time, so close by hearing about it from my family and friends. The current situation is a lot worse there than it looks in videos and images. Up to this date, 70% of the municipalities have been affected by this catastrophe (374 of 497). So far, we are talking about a million people who have been impacted by the floods, with the governor declaring a State of Emergency for several counties, including Porto Alegre. Victims have lost everything, and with flash floods still a threat, the crisis is anticipated to worsen. As #Spain contends with deadly #floods, Lauren Herzer Risi and Syed Imran Ali discuss how to build resiliency in the face of widening climate crises. "Today, climate chaos and conflict are driving an unprecedented global humanitarian crisis. More than 310 million people today need urgent humanitarian assistance and more than 120 million people (over 1.5% of the world’s population) are forcibly displaced—the highest levels ever recorded. In the face of such overwhelming numbers, it becomes easy to lose sight of the human reality. We need to remember that each one of these numbers is a person with stories of loss, struggle, and resilience. We need to remember that people only leave their homes when there is no other choice, when to stay means they may not survive," says Ali. And it is that perspective that will help to bring solutions that will serve the needs of individuals and communities during crises, and build a resiliency that can make humanitarian response more fit for purpose. The Importance of Research in Humanitarian Work In humanitarian assistance, two types of interventions are crucial: rapid relief for immediate crises and long-term development for sustainable solutions. Research plays a vital role in shaping these interventions, guiding NGOs in hurricane coasts, war-torn cities, and famine-affected towns and other disasters. By informing strategies and ensuring ethical practices, research helps prevent harm and improve outcomes. Despite the challenges, high-quality research in humanitarian settings is essential for saving lives and promoting resilience. Collaboration: The Bridge to Progress What if the solution to our biggest challenges lies in the hands of others? At Forward Africa, our recent climate change literacy and flood prevention project in Oguta and Ohaji Egbema LGAs of Imo State reminded us of this profound truth: collaboration isn’t just helpful—it’s transformative. Faced with the daunting task of conducting a needs assessment for flood-affected families, we encountered significant hurdles. Logistics, damage evaluation, and cost implications loomed large. But instead of retreating, we turned to our partners, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Imo State Chapter. Their response was nothing short of inspiring. Through their War Against Indiscipline (WAI) Brigade, a paramilitary arm rooted in these communities, volunteers stepped forward—many of them flood victims themselves. Their personal connection to the crisis brought unparalleled insight, making the process swift, impactful, and achievable at almost no cost. This experience reaffirms that collaboration is more than sharing responsibilities—it’s about amplifying collective strength and leveraging shared purpose. As 2024 draws to a close, the lesson is clear: when we align our efforts, the impossible becomes achievable. Collaboration might just be the magic we need to finish the year strong. Let’s commit to building bridges, not walls. #Collaboration #SharedPurpose #ClimateAction #FloodPrevention #ForwardAfrica
