please stop both yes please (I actually just the other day saw a career coach on instagram (link to the post in comments) talking about how she lied about being able to speak Spanish, during one job application (got the job) and subsequently found that this job in Spain, which did indeed require the ability to speak Spanish, proved to be very difficult without said ability.... Her take on it: be bold and be a quick learner My take on it: if there are open jobs in a field you want, and you consider yourself a quick learner, prove it by applying yourself in advance, to learn the necessary skill to a needed level, so as to be able to truthfully and authentically put yourself forward for the job... bonus points: choose skills you actually want to acquire whether you "get the job" or not anyway, so that you're continually improving your own enjoyment levels in life and not jumping arbitary hoops the secular world puts out there for us to jump through... and ✨ THAT'S JUST ONE way to turn the job hunt into a form of self care ✨ )

another interesting take is that she thinks she got the job because she said "yes" to the "do you speak spanish?" question... but what if she had gotten the job even if she'd said "no, but I'm a fast learner and I already speak French, English, Russian" and they really needed her French, English and Russian speaking combo ... she might have gotten FREE help and support to learn Spanish, instead of stressfully hustling to learn on her own while pretending she could all along... to me, saying yes was a fear based response and that's something we need to notice in ourselves. What are we afraid of by being honest? That's more of a cue to learning about ourselves constructively in a way that can guide our decisions and actions in a way that looks after ourselves authentically. Admitting a deficiency/asking for help in one area is not a sign of weakness, and CAN co-occur with confidence in that we bring a ton of value in other areas.

ps Jenny Sukut you asked me a while back how I help turn the job hunt into a form of self-care... I've shared one mini-way in this post. The main methodology is broader though. And as you know a book is in the works so stay tuned :)

Shockingly, I have actually seen people here on LI legitimately recommending lying on résumés, to get interviews. 🤦♂️

The phrase I’ve used is I’ve never done that but I can learn. Admittedly, I haven’t job hunted recently. It worked 13 or so years ago.

Reminds me of my dad, who always claimed he was far too lazy and far too much of a coward to be dishonest. Too lazy to remember the lies, too scared of being caught, ergo incorruptible.
