Growing up, I didn’t see anyone like me in the equestrian world. Statistics show that only about 0.016% of competitive equestrians in the United States are Black. This serves as a stark reminder of how exclusive the industry has been. But instead of discouraging me, it fueled my desire to change the narrative. My love for horses started at age 10, when I first sat on a pony. I remember the thrill, the freedom I felt—but when I begged my parents for riding lessons, they said noooo way! My parents are immigrants and they knew nothing about horses and no one in my family rode horses! They probably thought I was insane. They probably still think that now! It wasn’t until I was 12 that they finally agreed, and I was ecstatic. From that point, I knew horses would be part of my life forever. As I started attending horse shows, I couldn’t help but notice I was often the only woman of color among thousands of competitors and spectators. Rather than feeling out of place, I let it push me harder toward my dreams. I wanted to be the visibility that I didn’t have growing up—a role model for young Black riders who might think this world isn’t for them. The numbers don’t lie: the equestrian world has a diversity problem. A 2021 survey by The Equestrian Trust highlighted that over 85% of equestrians in the U.S. identify as white. This lack of representation is why I turned to influencing and content creation, to make equestrian spaces more inclusive, accessible, and visible for people of color. Through my work, I aim to show that the equestrian community is for everyone—and that breaking into this world isn’t just possible, it’s essential for its future. My journey is proof that we can create change, one ride at a time.

There’s something magical about the atmosphere here, where even a casual meeting can turn into a shared moment of joy. The trot-up today was both thrilling and tense, a stark reminder that not all horses will pass and get the opportunity to compete. Riders, horses, trainers, owners, and grooms have traveled from all four corners of the world, bringing with them an incredible amount of commitment, investment, and sacrifice. Burghley is one of the most prestigious equestrian events globally, and it’s a true test of horse and rider—a testament to the deep relationships, partnerships, and trust that are almost beyond comprehension. Having lived near Burghley and with family still close by, this event is more than just a date in the calendar—it’s a cherished tradition. Over the next few days, we’ll be meeting up with more friends and family, soaking in every moment of this unique experience.
