It's great to see the final evaluations coming out for projects that I've seen develop over the years, particularly because the length of time they were running for meant that some really wonderful and mature work could develop. Everything Anna says below is obviously more pertinent as she had a huge role in making this happen over the years, but I'm struck by this from the conclusions: "Even with the emphasis on sustainability in the original programme aims and the steps taken throughout the project to lower the barriers to ongoing impact and manage the endings, is it realistic to think that within the life of a project, even one as comparatively long-lived as BCJ that when the funding comes to an end, highly skilled, relational work can continue at a similar level? Do stakeholders collude in a fantasy of sustainability at the beginning of projects in order to meet the required hurdles to secure funding to provide much needed services, when we know that the wider system lacks the resources to continue the work after the funding ends? Perhaps there is a more honest conversation within the sector about what sustainability and legacy mean in this context. And perhaps we should ask how these projects can be sustainable and what that would really take? For example, does an express commitment of legacy funding arrangements need to be built into programme design and partnership agreements?" #evaluation #learning #sustainability #care
Perhaps because I needed to take a beat, perhaps because I’ve had my head down in my new role.. but, it has taken me a while to be ready to reflect on the significance of BCJ’s evaluation report. It is something I’m very proud of and feel emotional about, because it reflects the lives of hundreds of extraordinary people over several years. I couldn’t be more delighted to have our work described as exceptional, authentic and radical, as well as notable for collaborating with large numbers of the least heard young people in our society. It is time for each Australian to step up, use their minds to think through and problem-solve to take personal responsibility with action. Our culture has slipped into a 'group think' state of mind without question. The tail is wagging the dog, and people following like sheep. #JoannaBryant states it so eloquently in this short presentation https://lnkd.in/gCgcsM8f

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard phrases like “you’re so lucky to do what you do” and you’re very privileged to have a job like yours”. No, no, no, no, no. If you’ve ever said this to someone working in the Culture and Heritage Sector, STOP IT! It’s hugely insulting. We’ve worked very hard, made sacrifices, faced challenges (especially in the last 15 years) and above all, we are good at what we do. In short, if we are doing what we do, in a very competitive sector, it’s because we are good at it. The “you’re lucky” and you’re privileged” view has systematically served to devalue the jobs we perform and their value to society. So next time you talk to someone in the culture and heritage sector feel free to congraturle them on doing an important job or even tell them how much you admire or envy what they do, but don’t tell them they’re lucky or privileged. If you want to learn more about how valuable culture and heritage is to both the economy and society then check out this report by Historic England: https://lnkd.in/eAPTnnyH And https://lnkd.in/eJuJGjYU. https://lnkd.in/eWmmVEMZ
