We know some of our parents will have questions as regards our Kids Summer Swim Camp. Here’s a list of FAQs and their answers. - Are the kids staying from 9am to 12pm? No, just for a 35-minute time slot. - Are you going to feed them during the camp? No, the kids are only participating in a 35-minute fun swim session and will go home to eat. - Is the fee for the whole 3 weeks? No, it's just for 1 week. - Are there other fun activities like art & craft sessions? No, it's purely a 35-minute fun swim session. - Can my kid attend for 2 days from the 1 week? No, they must attend for the full week. - Can my 1-year-old baby join? No, it's for children aged 3 years and above. - Will my child start swimming in 1 week? No, learning to swim is a step-by-step process that takes at least 24 lessons for a child to start swimming independently. - Will my baby learn water confidence? Yes, absolutely. - Is my baby safe without me in the water? Yes, the kids are safe with the coaches in the water, and there are also admins watching outside the pool. 💷 Money vs Saftey ⛔️ Are some swim schools sacrificising standards for retention?! This may be controversial for some, but it’s time we have an honest conversation about long distance swimming badges in smaller pools… Lately, I’ve encountered too many situations where children arrive at a new swim school with a 100m badge for example, yet when they swim in a standard 25m pool, they struggle to complete a length without stopping, holding the side, or resorting to doggy paddle. So, how did they earn that badge? Many swim schools working out of smaller pools are handing out these long distance badges as a way to keep kids and parents happy. I get it as a parent when your kids gets an award not only do the kids feel great, you’re happy, you feel like their progressing, so you keep paying. But truth is, this practise isn’t just misleading, it’s potentially dangerous. Swimming is a life-saving skill, not just a box-ticking exercise. If as a swim school, you’re giving children a false sense of achievement or overestimating their abilities, you’re undermining the very reason you teach them to swim. I’ve seen firsthand the frustration this causes when a child is moved down a group because their badge doesn’t match their true ability in a larger pool. The child feels demotivated, parents feel misled, and the swim school is left to deal with the fallout. Not to mention, we’re putting children’s safety on the line. A badge should be a mark of real achievement, not just as a marketing tool, right? As a consultant, I help swim schools strike that balance between providing the care and love needed to be an excellent swim teacher while maintaining the commercial aspects of running a swim business. A lot of swim schools lack confidence or knowledge on commerciality opportunities, therefore rely on small subsidies like badges to uplift revenue. Let’s make sure that in our pursuit of growth, we’re not sacrificing safety or quality. 🏊♀️ SWIMSAFER Week 2024 at AFAC: Floating Towards a Safer Future! 🏊♂️ Throughout the SWIMSAFER Week (November 18–24),  AFAC was fortunate to partner with SWIM Coaches & Teachers Australia (SWIM) as the WA ambassador for the program with Channel 7 and Channel 9 coming to the facility to get some coverage! As summer approaches, the importance of equipping children and adults with vital water safety skills is critical. AFAC is proud to play a part of delivering water safety skills to our community encouraging all to enrol into a Swim School program. AFAC has over 600,000 individual entries into the aquatics space over a 12-month period with over half of these entries being specific for our Swim School program. These opportunities allow for students to build skills, confidence, and resilience in the water to be safer, smarter, and stronger swimmers. This year, SWIM Coaches & Teachers Australia (SWIM), in partnership with Float to Survive, shines a spotlight on a life-saving skill often overlooked: floating. The latest SWIMSAFER Week report reveals alarming gaps in water safety: 📉 44% of parents are not confident their children could handle a water emergency. 🌊 45% of children are rated as having poor or average floating ability. 💔 31% of children are not enrolled in swimming lessons. Floating is a critical survival skill. It allows swimmers to conserve energy, stay calm, and gain precious time during emergencies. Throughout the SWIMSAFER Week (November 18–24), AFAC, included '74 hours of float clinics' into their program to enhance both children’s and parents’ water confidence. This summer, AFAC is pushing to float towards a safer future! 🌊

Can your 12-year-old swim to survive? Building essential water safety skills is crucial for 12-year-olds. By this age they should have the ability to keep themselves safe, whether it’s at the pool, beach, river, or wherever they love to swim. The National Benchmarks set a guide for what every child should aim to achieve - By 12 years old, every child should be able to: ✅ Enter and exit the water for a range of environments ✅ Float, scull or tread water for 2 minutes and signal for help ✅ Swim continuously for 50 metres ✅ Surface dive, swim underwater and search to recover an object from deep water ✅ Rescue a person using a non-swimming rescue technique Learning these essential skills early on can save lives and create a lifelong love for swimming! Here are some essential swim safety tips to ensure your little ones stay safe while enjoying the water: 💦Supervise Constantly: Always keep a close eye on children when they're in or near water. No distractions! 💦Learn CPR: Knowing CPR can be a lifesaver in emergency situations. As a registered nanny with our agency, our families require you keep your CPR up-to-date. Check your certification and sign up for a class if it expires soon. Encourage parents to take CPR with you also to be ready as a collective household. 💦Swim Lessons: Encourage parents to enroll children in swim lessons to help them become more confident and skilled swimmers.
