🌟 Exciting News from Justice Jackline Mogeni on the Case of Slain Lion Olobor! Justice Jackline Mogeni issued a one-of-a-kind directive regarding the Slain Lion Olobor case filed by American Luis Franco. The ELC judge reiterated the responsibility of every person to conserve and protect wildlife resources. Justice Mogeni opined that since this is a sensitive matter and of global importance, it should be held outside the corners of a courtroom to allow any interested person to participate. Thus, favoring mediation in the form of a community hearing as opposed to courtroom litigation. In her wisdom, the judge directed that the mediation take place at a site where Olobor was allegedly killed. This decision ensures that the proceedings are deeply connected to the heart of the matter. The lion enthusiast community will finally get closure. Most importantly, Olobor will get justice. We encourage lion enthusiasts to attend the forthcoming hearing in large numbers. We undertake to share as much information as possible.#JusticeForOlobor #WildlifeProtection #CommunityHearing

It's important to realize how close some species are to disappearing. Adding unique detection methods, like the ability to detect ivory being smuggled in cargo or baggage, is a major step in helping dismantle the illegal wildlife trade. The more items are captured, the more arrests made, and the more equipment seized, the harder it is for groups to continue poaching our remaining endangered animals. It's only one step...but one we're eager to make as a software company that specializes in tailored detection algorithms.
Elephant numbers have reportedly dropped by 62% over the last decade, with an estimated 100 African elephants killed every day by poachers for ivory and other products. #HSI’s Wildlife and Environmental Crimes Unit works with state, federal, and international law enforcement and private partners to enforce anti-wildlife trafficking and environmental crime laws and reduce the demand for illegally traded wildlife and natural resources. On #WorldElephantDay, we reinforce our commitment to disrupt wildlife trafficking networks, apprehend and prosecute traffickers, seize and forfeit proceeds, and pursue civil and criminal penalties. I’ve go to admit, I found this a hard to watch but a brilliant reel giving insights into the impact of the Illegal Wildlife trade on Africa. Everyday, our continent’s natural treasures like our wildlife, fauna, marine life, trees, are being raided to serve the desires of people in far away lands. This has been going on for too long. In a world that has been so badly depleted of it’s natural environment, where hearing the dawn-chorus of birds is privilege for many, Africans, we really need to do more to value and protect our natural treasures, like our Wildlife. No African banking institution that is serious about the Environment or basic Compliance should be devoid of a financial crime strategy which doesn’t specifically address the Illegal Wildlife Trade. Inadvertently facilitating money laundering by wildlife traffickers both African or those from overseas should be a Considered Unacceptable in every Boardroom. Otherwise in the end it is our continent that will suffer. The elephants will be gone ; the Lions will be something of books; the Rhinos same as the Dinosaurs. Watch the video and share it with your staff, colleagues and family. Don’t Like it. Frankly that’s not why we created. Just encourage staff to know more about it and Raise SARs (Suspicious Activity Reports) if they think a transaction is endangering Africa’s natural beauties. Banks and Fintechs can make a difference in the fight against the Illegal Wildlife Life Trade.
This short video on wildlife trafficking will show you the dangers of this trade both in Africa and globally. The video also shows the role that banks and financial institutions play in both aiding and preventing wildlife trafficking. At Africa Risk Management and Compliance Partners, we have run webinars on wildlife trafficking in the past and plan to run webinars on this topic in the future. As with other areas of transnational organized crime, wildlife crime is primarily rooted in opportunities for profit: 1. Who is involved in this crime? 2. Where is it happening? 3. How big are the flows? 4. What can be done to stop it? 5. What is being done to stop it? Are questions asked everyday by those trying to to make necessary corrections.

🌿 Join us in reflecting on NIJ's Term of the Month for April 2024: Wrongful Convictions. Wrongful convictions are cases where innocent individuals are wrongly convicted of crimes they did not commit, often due to factors like mistaken eyewitness identification, false confessions, flawed forensic evidence, inadequate legal representation, coerced pleas, or official misconduct. Wrongful convictions not only impact the individuals directly affected but also their families, communities, and society as a whole. They weaken trust in the justice system and allow true perpetrators to evade accountability. At Wildlife Forensic Fund, we recognize the critical importance of justice, not only for humans but also for our wildlife. As we strive to combat wildlife crime, we're reminded of the broader implications of injustice and the vital role of science in addressing it. Join us in advocating for a fair and equitable justice system, where science informs policy and prevents wrongful convictions.
