“Applicants must have 5-10 years’ experience of managing teams”. Really? Why?
(That would have ruled Xabi Alonso out of the Leverkusen job).
Would that make them a better hire than someone with little team management experience? Perhaps in some instances yes, but…
Always good to throw a sporting analogy in, so let’s look at Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. Even if the overhyped, megabucks world of elite football leaves you cold, you might want to consider hiring an “Alonso”, next time you’re in the market for someone to lead your business.
To paraphrase Constantin Eckner’s article -
https://lnkd.in/eCCm2SHf
· Leverkusen's resurgence traces back to Alonso's arrival (October 2022), injecting fresh impetus into a team that was 17th (out of 18) in the Bundesliga standings.
· When he first stepped into the role, he was still an inexperienced coach, having only managed Real Sociedad's reserves during the three previous years.
· The transformation from an underperforming group of undoubtedly gifted players into a cohesive unit who are unbeaten this season is testament to Alonso's tactical acumen and leadership skills.
So, before you go for that external hire with 10 years’ team management experience, maybe ask yourself if there is an “Alonso” already in your organisation, and if not, take a look at the external candidates with potential to deliver the “tactical acumen and leadership skills” you need for your business.
Or as Belbin might put it – go for the suitable rather than the eligible; you may end up with a ‘surprise fit’!
