My Good Fortune That Ratan Tata Did Not Meet Me
Looking at LinkedIn today, every second scroll presents a heartwarming "Ratan Tata changed my life" kind of post, and I’m feeling left out. Everyone seems to have a Ratan Tata encounter worth publishing. So, in the spirit of not being left behind, here’s mine.
The year was circa 1992. The location: Delhi (Palam) airport lounge, buzzing with the murmur of excitement. Someone important was in the room, the whispers of 'Ta Ta, Ta Ta' making their rounds. I couldn't help but wonder why people were still talking about goodbyes in the lounge. Aren't the "Tatas" meant to be left at the entry gate or visitors area? But then I saw him—the man himself—Ratan Tata, in the flesh, walking toward me. Ah, the 'Tatas' I was hearing was of welcome, not goodbye.
Dressed in a crisp dark blue suit, his presence was everything you'd imagine. Now, as he approached, I had a dilemma. If he sat beside me, what would I say? There I was, clutching a John Grisham novel, hardly a riveting topic for a business magnate. Should I bring up those Tata ads on Doordarshan? “We also make steel…” and all that? Perhaps I could throw in a bit of advertising advice for free (I mean, I was still in college and marketing was one thing you did not need any qualifications and everyone is an expert)
But before I could finalise my brilliant icebreaker in my head, he walked right past me, settling down at a spot far from my reach. No meet, no greet. And I went back to reading ‘The Firm’
Today, as I read the endless tributes, I can't help but wonder what could have happened if we’d got to meet and speak that day. Maybe he would have been impressed by my youthful insight and offered me a management trainee job on the spot. Maybe I’d have risen to the top of Tata Steel or gotten an office with a view of the Mumbai skyline.
Or perhaps, more likely, I’d have ended up in Jamshedpur, working my way up through a labyrinth of departments...starting out as a clerk.
But none of that happened. And now, as I reflect, I realise it’s for the best. Else, I wouldn’t have met all the amazing people I’ve encountered in my professional and personal life, I wouldn’t have had the good and bad experiences which made me who I’m today, and, I most certainly, wouldn’t be writing this note today.
In fact, I’m quite lucky that I never met Ratan Tata. And if I may say so, it’s probably a good thing for Mr. Tata, too.
As the popular ‘Lorry’ bumper sticker in India goes
Ok. Tata. Bye-bye.
