🌍 Exciting News Alert! The EU and Rwanda are forging a path towards sustainable development and resilience in value chains across Africa! 🌱💼 On February 19th, the European Union (EU) and Rwanda signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), marking a significant step towards advancing sustainable raw materials value chains. This partnership underscores Rwanda's pivotal role in fostering economic diversification and ethical practices in critical raw material (CRM) extraction and processing. Rwanda, with its abundant reserves of critical resources like tantalum, tungsten, lithium, and rare earth elements (REE), holds a strategic position in this collaboration. Notably, the Karuruma tin smelting plant stands as a testament to Rwanda's commitment to sustainable transition in the region. The MoU outlines five key areas of cooperation: 1️⃣ Integration of CRMs into existing value chains 2️⃣ Adherence to ethical practices throughout the supply chain 3️⃣ Infrastructure development and investment climate improvement 4️⃣ Collaboration in research and development 5️⃣ Capacity building for lasting success While specific terms are yet to be defined, the agreement sets the stage for a fruitful long-term partnership. Moreover, Rwanda's unveiling of its Circular Economy Action Plan and Road Map in 2022 hints at exciting developments to come, possibly to be revealed at WCEF2024. 📅 Save the date! It was a pleasure to attend the Africa CEO Forum again. This event highlights the critical role of the private sector in the continent's development and brings together business leaders, investors, and policymakers from Africa and around the world. Africa's youthful and growing population underscores its immense potential, making it an attractive destination for investors and a fundamental partner for Eni of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Over the years, we have built strong and trustful partnerships based on local knowledge and mutual commitment. Our collaborative approach has fostered win-win relationships with the countries where we operate with a continuous effort for a 'Just' Transition. An example of this is the collaboration announced at the event with the IFC - International Finance Corporation and the Italian Climate Fund to support #biofuel production and farmers in Kenya. This investment will enable Eni to increase both the production of advanced biofuel feedstocks cultivated in Kenya and the construction of new pressing facilities. The project will also work with farmers, providing inputs, mechanisation, logistics, certification, and training to help them produce oilseeds. These are grown on degraded land not suitable for food production or rotated with food crops, contributing to improved soil fertility. In June 2024 I had the privilege to attend the 10th Eastern and Southern Africa stakeholder conference meeting on NTFPs in Daarselam Tanzania. The conference focused on: ·       The enabling environment for NTFPs in East and Southern Africa. ·       Various best practices were shared. ·       Sustainability of trade towards the forum was discussed. ·       Participation of Zambia and Zimbabwe was appreciated. ·       The forum discussed that monetary value must be attached to the NTFP products. ·       There were discussions around the definition of NTFPs if it can include some fauna. ·       The private sector is working with various local governments to improve bylaws that promote commercialization of NTFPs. ·       The private entities are playing a key role in value addition and packaging. ·       The NTFPs are being promoted and sold for local and export consumption. ·       The private sector across the divide is working with ministries of SMEs and energy to enhance economic empowerment opportunities. ·       There are carbon credit opportunities that can be explored- the private sector is still studying the concept. ·       Financial sustainability will help in the growth of NTFP trading.

𝐖𝐒𝐔 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐅𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐎𝐑 𝐂𝐀𝐋𝐋𝐒 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐒𝐔𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐀𝐁𝐋𝐄 𝐒𝐎𝐋𝐔𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒 𝐓𝐎 𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐃 𝐖𝐀𝐒𝐓𝐄 In a recent groundbreaking research project, WSU’s Professor Grace Okuthe, has beseeched the sub-Saharan Africa region to explore fruit and vegetable waste's economic and environmental benefits. In her paper, "Valorising Fruit and Vegetable Waste: The Untapped Potential for Entrepreneurship in Sub-Saharan Africa," Okuthe explored ways food waste could be diverted from landfills and turned into viable enterprises that could enhance youth employment. Supported by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Okuthe is part of a bigger call to accelerate the adoption of new technological and social innovations in waste management. One of the drawbacks associated with the lack of proper waste management is greenhouse gas emissions, which exacerbate climate change. This has affected weather patterns in Africa, resulting in droughts and devastating floods that have claimed lives, damaged infrastructure and reduced agricultural productivity.
