During a ransomware attack on Change Healthcare in February, a significant number of individuals in the United States had their personal information compromised. The breach was confirmed by the parent company, UnitedHealth Group, which stated that the information accessed could potentially impact a large portion of the American population. Despite facing questions from healthcare providers and lawmakers about the extent of the breach and the type of data compromised, UnitedHealth Group has not provided specific details. However, they have offered free credit monitoring and identity theft protection for two years to those affected. The company acknowledged making a payment to prevent further disclosure of data but did not reveal the exact amount or recipient. Hackers had access to UnitedHealth Group's systems for more than a week before launching the attack, according to reports. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is investigating the incident to determine if HIPAA regulations were violated. UnitedHealth Group has set up a website and helpline for those impacted but is unable to provide detailed information on the consequences at this time. CEO Andrew Witty is set to testify before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on May 1. Singing River Health System, a key healthcare provider in Mississippi, has revealed that 895,204 individuals have been impacted by a ransomware attack back in August last year, with this figure originally being 501 impacted individuals. The attack disrupted operations and led to significant data theft, including names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security Numbers, and medical information. The attack was claimed by the Rhysida ransomware gang, which are notorious for attacking healthcare service providers, most recently, even children's hospitals. This incident, like many others, underscores the urgent need for businesses to start safeguarding the data itself, rather than just its perimeter that surrounds it. Network security and data security are separate entities and must be treated differently. Our data-centric DPRM solution ensures your data remains safe, even in the event of a breach, by empowering data owners with encryption keys. https://lnkd.in/gU2Kw-v7 #CyberSecurity #Ransomware #DataProtection #HealthcareSecurity #CertesDPRM

Keep your eye on this breach because we haven't even learned the worst of it. The unit that processes 50% of the nations medical claims was breached and held hostage to ransomware that threatened to expose patient data. United Healthcare paid the ransom and the fraud ring still exposed the data. In the next few months, we are probably going to learn how massive this breach was and how many adult and children may be effected by having their personal data exposed. Impersonation fraud has gotten that much stronger. #data #databreach #fraud #ransomware #identity #identityverification #KYC https://lnkd.in/ghVxnHPm

US cancer center data breach exposes info of 827,000 patients City of Hope National Cancer Institute confirmed a data security incident on its site, informing that it suffered a security breach between September and October last year. Earlier this week, the healthcare organization published a notice of "City of Hope launched an investigation into the nature and scope of the incident with the assistance of a leading cybersecurity firm, which determined that an unauthorized third party accessed a subset of our systems and obtained copies of some files between September 19, 2023, and October 12, 2023." The sensitive data that may have been exposed as a result of this incident includes the following: Full names, email address, phone number, date of birth, social security number, driver's license, government ID, bank account number, credit card details, health insurance information, medical records and history, etc. The City of Hope says there's no evidence of identity theft or fraud occurring due to this incident and clarifies that not every data type listed above was compromised for every patient, so the level of exposure varies per case. https://lnkd.in/gZ6wzdTX #cybersecurity #cyberattack #cybercrime #cyberrisk #cyberthreats #informationsecurity #infosec #breach #databreach #malware #google #bing #networksecurity #technicalsupport #itservices #itsupport #dataprotection #datasecurity #itnews #hackingprevention #cloudsecurity #riskmanagement #fbi #vciso #securityexpert #cisa #financialrisk #manufacturing #iot #ransomware
