I initially wasn't going to post this, but actually I think it shows some interesting and distressing realities about the experience of trying to connect with nature in the UK. Here, a woman posts in a wild camping group (a wonderful forum for sharing good practice and love for the activity) about a first experience shared with her sister. She includes the phrase 'leave no trace' and is clearly camped away from built up areas, livestock, crops, in a National Park and one of our ancient commons. You couldn't really ask for a better way for someone to take their first steps into wild camping. The response? To be called 'freeloading scum' by someone who has taken umbrage at the fact that they seem to be enjoying this activity free of charge. The commenter in question isn't based in the area. They live over 300 miles away, in a different country. They have contributed no other comments or posts to the page. How would you feel as a person (especially a woman) being called scum by a stranger for doing everything right, doing something which can be scary at times? Scum. Would that make you feel safe late at night in the woods? Would it make you want to venture out again? What if you were a queer person, a black person, or a migrant? There are legal barriers to nature connection. There are also social barriers. Today there are whole generations of people who feel that unless you are paying for the privilege (and paying handsomely) then you have no place at all in the countryside, it doesn't matter how well prepared you are. We have allowed ourselves to be socialised into a commodification mindset where every action has to be a financial transaction and this is the end result. It is fair and right to ensure that tourism is a sustainable industry, supporting good quality jobs and infrastructure. But too often that idea is used as a stick to beat innocent people with. In the meantime - The British Mountaineering Council, Campaign for National Parks and others will continue to stand for the 'freeloaders' who feel that the right to access the countryside is just that. A right. Not a privilege to be bought and paid for by those who are able and not conditional on how much you can pay into local coffers. #NatureConnection #Freeloaders #RightToRoam #WildCamping #NatureConnection #Nature #Camping

I’ve always embraced bold marketing, and for good reason - it works. CampWild is rooted in my passion for creating something meaningful, and I’ve leaned into big, vibrant campaigns to spread the word and ignite momentum. It’s been a key factor in CampWild’s rapid success because I truly believe in the incredible value of what we offer - a gateway to 24 hours immersed in nature. But this year, something gave me pause. I’ve started to reflect on some of the messaging we use, particularly phrases like “We are a diverse & inclusive community” and “Wild camping for everyone.” While these statements are true to an extent, they come with important caveats. When Alex and I founded CampWild, we envisioned an inclusive and diverse community from day one. We recognised that wild camping isn’t naturally accessible to everyone, so we built tools, resources, and relationships to change that. From helping parents feel confident camping with kids, to creating opportunities for people with disabilities, to ensuring women feel safe camping solo, we’ve taken purposeful steps to make wild camping more accessible. Yet, I must also recognise the limits of my perspective. As two white men with a particular sphere of influence, we are not representative of everyone’s lived experience. This realisation has sparked an important question: how can we genuinely make CampWild a place for all? Over the past year, we’ve been inspired by members like Toni at Touchgrass, Ed & Lois at Millimetres to Mountains, and Mel at Make Magic - people who’ve used our spaces to foster their own communities and initiatives. But we know we can and must do more. In 2025, I’m setting myself a personal challenge: to listen, learn, and work towards a truly inclusive CampWild. This means connecting with people from all walks of life, seeking their input, and finding ways to better serve underrepresented groups in the outdoor space. It won’t happen overnight, and we might not get everything right, but I’m up for the challenge. Because wild camping should be for everyone, and I’m determined to play my part in making that a reality. #ecoadventure #wildcampingisforeveryone #natureconnection Photo by Jack Bicknell at our Autumn Campout.

Do you want your firm or organization to truly stand out? Hire a content creator/writer who can do something different instead of the same old tired posts. They don’t have to be funny. But they should make a lasting impression and engage the audience from the first sentence. Using a question helps! For example, instead of “Congratulations to our newly certified professional engineers!” Try something different. Ask a question. Engage. “Who is meticulous, great at math, and has the patience to take an incredibly long and ardorous multiple choice exam? A newly certified professional engineer that’s who! Congratulations…insert names” Not my finest work, but you get the point. You just have to create a memorable experience. The English language has so many words and style elements with unique shades that we can use to persuade, inform, and engage audiences. Don’t lean on the same old tired business cliches and jargon posts. Instead, follow the NPS where no campaign has gone before—bravely into a new and fascinating world, where we actually enjoy receiving information!
In da jam, we all fam’. We all fam’, but we’re also not all fam’. Know what we’re saying? Bison and other wildlife on roads may look fam shaped, but they aren’t looking to join your clurb anytime soon. Please drive carefully and keep your eyes on the road. Remember to follow speed limits and stay in your car if you find yourself in a (wildlife) jam. In essence, slow down and enjoy the view! <three hours later> You’re still there? Umm, well, they’ll move when ready. Image: A herd of bison surrounding a vehicle on a Yellowstone road. NPS/Frank #trafficjam #nationalparks #bison #yellowstone #travel #roadsafety
