What do Mariinsky Ballet’s Kimin Kim, Paris Opéra Ballet’s Sae Eun Park, Dutch National Ballet principal Young Gyu Choi, and American Ballet Theatre’s Joo Won Ahn, Sung Woo Han, and SunMi Park have in common? All are alumni of South Korea’s Korea National University of the Arts and/or the affiliated Korea National Institute for Gifted in Arts, collectively known as K-Arts. We spoke to Professor Sun Hee Kim about the school’s method of establishing a foundation for dancers and a typical day for students. What are you brave enough to suck at? I took ballet for the first time at age 24. Every evening for a month, I drove across town and practiced ballet for two hours. I was in waaaaaaaay over my head. Ballet terms are in French--who knew? Not me. I was clueless when the teacher called out 'tendu,' 'rond de jambe,' etc. And it was *hard.* I got into amazing shape that summer. Now, I watch ballet and wonder how the dancers are not all red-faced and puffing. You know what, though? I had the *best* time. That ballet class is one of my most joyful memories. Being an absolute beginner is okay--exhilarating, even. We think we need to have stuff figured out before we begin; and yet we only figure things out by doing. (And the doing turns out to be...fun. Surprise!) If you want to write a nonfiction book but you're an absolute beginner and have no idea where to start--I've got you. I created Book In Six to take aspiring nonfiction authors all the way from "idea" to "the end" in six months, with 183 days' worth of specific action items. It's everything I've learned about writing nonfiction books, all in one place. Check it out here: https://lnkd.in/gmJyzfpK When is the last time you were an absolute beginner? My most recent experience with this: salsa lessons! So fun! 💃 [Image: the author in a jean jacket, white shirt, floral shirt and white chunky shoes. Whether dancers loved them or (often) hated them, remote classes were pretty much the only way that most students and pros could maintain their training when COVID-19 lockdowns closed in-person studios in 2020. As restrictions lifted and in-person studios opened back up, unsurprisingly, demand for online classes fell. Many industry insiders expected remote classes to disappear entirely. But slowly, dancers started getting back online again a little more, and then a little more. Online dance training is here to stay, but the purpose has changed post-pandemic. I know a lot more about rugby than I do about ballet. What I do understand is the dedication. As our Practice Makes Perfect campaigns states: There is no shortcut to excellence. Ballet d'Jèrri know this well. Here are my thoughts on what ballet and litigation have in common in the pursuit excellence. - It takes teamwork. You need strength at every level and each member of the team committed to delivering the best for the audience (or in our case the client). - It takes constant practice. The fundamentals of ballet, like the fundamentals of law do not change. You practice and learn so you can apply these fundamentals in ever more complicated scenarios. You practice so you can make it look easy. - It takes creativity. Ballet is more outwardly creative than the legal world. However, at Baker & Partners we look for alternative solutions to problems. If we meet a road block we do not give up. We find a way round for our clients. - It takes guts. Performing on a stage. Standing up in court. You need to have confidence. Confidence comes from having a great team, solid teachers and years worth of practice. These things have the best chance of happening when the environment allows talent to thrive. At Baker & Partners this is what we strive to create.
Lawyers and ballet dancers do very different things. But, we do have some things in common. 🩰 We filmed Ballet d'Jèrri throughout their rehearsals for ‘Geographers of Solitude’ to bring to life the essence of Practice Makes Perfect for our twentieth-anniversary celebration. We chose to work with Ballet D’Jerri because, like us, they are dedicated to their craft and passionate about what they do. The performance is a conversation on diversity, the fragility of different voices, and fostering collective harmony. It explores the dynamic interplay between solitude and communal, on our individual and collective narratives. It delves into the notion of islands as a microcosm of the world at large – a contained environment where its inhabitants develop unique cultures and ways of organising societies. Thank you to Founding Artistic Director Carolyn Rose Ramsay for your vision and dancers Hanna Szychowicz, Reece Hudson, Anna Daly, Donovan Délis-McCarthy, Ombline Noyer, Stanley Young, Tabitha Dombroski and Yasset Roldan Garciarena for sharing an insight into your world and bringing Practice Makes Perfect to life.✨ 👉 When you’re in Jersey, be sure to check Ballet D’Jerri’s roster of events. Ballet D'Jerri, Jersey’s National Ballet is a company of full-time professional artists and athletes, and the first organisation of its kind to be based in the Channel Islands. https://lnkd.in/deywa6FV #PracticeMakesPerfect #BalletDJerri #BakerAndPartners #CelebratingTwentyYears

AI is a powerful tool, but according to Microsoft Copilot, it is unlikely to replace ballet dancers entirely. In fact, our favorite new assistant went on to explain why in a 5-point thesis that emphasized the importance of human emotion, #creativity, and interpretation in the art of ballet. Simply put, AI lacks the depth and personal touch that dancers bring to their performances. I mean, clearly! 💫 While #AI can assist in certain aspects, the collaborative process is inherently #human. Indeed!!! Speaking of beautiful real dancers, mark your calendars for April 27th and join us for Hollywood Ballet’s "Poetry in Motion", the first #Fundraising Gala Performance, followed by a Reception and Dinner at the BroadStage in Santa Monica! Hollywood Ballet is a new dance company that combines the powerful elegance of ballet with the dazzling allure of #Hollywood. For all our LA friends and connections, come support the new ballet company that is “ready to revamp L.A.’s ballet scene” according to Los Angeles Times. Get your tickets now and join us for an unforgettable evening where movement becomes poetry, and #ballet transcends time. 🎟 tickets available here: https://lnkd.in/deax5Aft And while we’re on the topic of AI-powered tools, we’d like to give a shout-out to the amazing platforms we use daily: Wix for our website, Intuit Mailchimp for all our email campaign management, Canva for our design creation, Givebutter for our donor base management, and of course, Tixr for our ticketing platform (we couldn't do this without you!). #ballet #losangeles #fundraisers #gala #AI

🎭 Communication Takes Centre Stage at Queensland Ballet 🩰 Queensland Ballet's announcement of the departure of Artistic Director Leanne Benjamin was a MASTERCLASS in effective communication. Ms Benjamin had only recently been appointed, so her early departure was not great news. 👏 Here’s how Queensland Ballet got it right in 5 steps: 1. CLARITY & DIRECTNESS: They delivered the news with respect, grace and consideration. 2. CONTENT & REASONING: They explained the situation transparently and with clarity, leaving the audience in no doubt about what happened and how it was being addressed. 3. EMPATHY & IMPACT: The announcement recognised the impact on Queensland Ballet’s staff and the ballet community. 4. FORWARD-LOOKING & PROCESS: The roadmap to a solution and next steps were outlined. Certainty comes from clarity and planning. 5. ENGAGEMENT & OPENNESS: A positive and open-ended statement to close off the communication keeps the channel open, respecting staff and fan voices. I get frustrated 😩😡 by the instinct of many leaders to shy away from delivering bad news, opting to sugarcoat or obscure the facts. Queensland Ballet made the brave, intentional choice to acknowledge the issue, transparently share the impact, and proactively define a pathway forward. Nailed in 1! 🏆 Read the announcement here.👇🏾 🔍 Does your organisation have a plan for effectively, empathetically and respectfully communicating news - good and bad? #courageousleadership #communications #strategiccommunications #transparency #QueenslandBallet https://lnkd.in/gAf8dwR6

🚙 Earlier this November, I had the honour of being invited to Hungary by former dance artist of Studio Wayne McGregor - Ballet Nights commissioned artist - and now independent #choreographer Jordan James Bridge to the world premiere of his first standalone work "Falling Into Jupiter." This was my first time visiting the Györi Ballet, and witnessing first hand how substantial corporate partnership in terms of millions of Euros can create the fertile grounds for game changing creativity - in this case AUDI HUNGARIA Zrt. This was also first time I have seen a corporate partner take the stage and and speak for an extended period outside of a boardroom/AGM - making significant statements their support a long term cultural vision for an entire city, with direct promises made live on stage to their captive audience. A new performance category for consideration indeed. With so much to celebrate, from Jordan's well deserved success, the incredible creative direction he fostered across dance, music, visual effects and theatre - and a wonderful post show reception - I spent a good portion of my recent 10 day break contemplating how significant partnerships are what drives true innovation, once again highlighting the need for the increasing professional dance population to be looking outside of the overstretched Arts Council England . In they case of Gyor, Why would a world class car brand be supporting the arts in this way? Well of course it just so happens that Gyor is home to their major manufacturing hub - opting to keep their production line european and ignore the allure of cheaper manufacturing to the east. WHAT IS MY POINT...? -> If you are going to convince an entire city population to remain in the location of your manufacturing hub, you had better be sure you keep them entertained, whether through the Ballet, Theatre and sports including Women's Handball! GREAT.... STILL WHAT IS MY POINT? Could there be any more important point being made than the fact in the face of this practical problem -> The practical answer is to fund DANCE! - No less a thriving company filled with ambitious artists, ambitious direction and a vision for the future aligned with a very wealthy corporate backer. An thus, my November revelation is complete. Anyone got the number for Rolls-Royce ...?
