One of the best bottom-up development initiatives anywhere in the country, to my knowledge. The fact that it’s taking place in an historically-disinvested neighborhood of considerable cultural and historic significance makes this work even more important.

Even though I'm more academia adjacent now, I still get excited when I see one of my articles come out! This article was written with my wonderful colleagues Sandra Sgoutas-Emch and Kevin Guerrieri and builds on our previous research around assessing community engagement across higher education institutions. How does this relate to nonprofits? An institutional mission is not always the most motivating thing for staff members. There can be a variety of other factors that cause individuals to become more or less engaged. The reality is that our recognition and reward systems need to value the work that we say we value as an organization. For example, suppose something is central to your mission but not valued as much as other items (e.g., community engagement is valued, but the rewards system [promotion/tenure] does not account for it). In that case, people are less likely to do it because they will not be rewarded. What you say you care about and what you show care for need to be aligned - otherwise, it is simply one theory in use and another theory in action. Rewarding good work with more work is not a reward - especially if those who are not doing good work are also rewarded or given less work. Beyond desks and wifi: The Community-Centric approach of x+why co-working with Community Manager Loux Rutherford This week I speak to Loux Rutherford, Community Manager at x+why, a new type of co-working space focused on supporting purpose-driven organizations and using business as a force for good. We talk about: Their approach to building community in the physical co-working spaces, including hosting events, facilitating connections between members, and tracking "meaningful interactions" to nurture relationships. To end the month of April. Proud to accomplish goals and triumphs. No matter how small. Accessibility Week is about inclusion. I spent many years in a sound booth learning to listen. Speak Properly. Learn new techniques that others took for granted. If only I knew what blindness meant to a soul. Once it becomes who you are. Learning to exist in a world full of unknowns and goals, quite easily stripped away if you are not prepared. There is never a bad time to make the effort. 💬 Emphasizing strategic communication, our discussion last week quickly zeroed in on the importance of aligning employee actions with corporate values and the essential role of leadership in modeling this commitment. We examined the broad implications for communicators in crafting narratives that support CSR activities as a core aspect of organizational identity and employee involvement. Undoubtedly, we’re at the forefront of these initiatives, facilitating internal understanding and external expression of the company’s social impact work. Key takeaway: Biopharma communicators’ role is critical in articulating and activating CSR strategy (regardless of company/client stage), ensuring that every level of the organization is informed and engaged.
