Today I want to get real about what it means to be a beginner, again, at such a later stage in my career and life. I’ve spent most of my life in spaces where I felt confident, established—where I knew how to navigate and get things done. But stepping into the world of tech and startups as a first-time founder? Nuh-uh. That's a whole different story. There's a deep humility in being a baby again. Suddenly, I’m the one asking the “basic” questions, Googling terms mid-meeting, and learning how to navigate a completely new field while building something I deeply believe in. For a nerd like me, it’s exciting in some ways because I get to learn something new every single day (whether I like it or not!). But it’s also uncomfortable as hell. It's vulnerable, it's really raw. And, I wouldn't do it any other way. Being a beginner teaches you to let go of the need to “have it all together.” It pushes you to ask for help, to collaborate, to be humble, and to grow in ways you didn’t even realize were possible. It’s a reminder that expertise isn’t the endgame—curiosity, openness and dedication to learning are. So today, I’m giving a big hug to the beginner in me—and in all of us. Hey founders! Think you've nailed down a problem worth solving? Let's make sure before you dive in headfirst. The goal isn't to prove yourself right. It's to learn fast and cheap before investing big. Here are three simple ways to test your problem: 💥 The "Ouch" Test Ask 10 potential customers to rate the problem on a scale of 1-10, where 10 is "hair-on-fire urgent." ✴ If you get mostly 8-10s, you're onto something. ✴ Lots of 5-7s? It's "nice to solve" but not crucial. ✴ Mostly 1-4s? Time to rethink. Pro tip: Listen for stories and emotions, not just numbers. ❓ The "Five Whys" Deep Dive Pick 5 potential customers and dig deep into the problem: ✴ Start with "Why is this a problem for you?" ✴ Follow each answer with another "Why?" until you've asked "Why?" five times. ✴ If you hit a root cause that resonates across multiple people, you're on the right track. ✴ If the answers diverge wildly or feel superficial, you might not have a significant problem. Remember: The goal is to uncover the real, underlying issue. 🕵♀️ 🕵♂️ The "DIY Detective" Look for existing DIY solutions or workarounds. ✴ Search forums, Reddit, or Facebook groups. ✴ If people are cobbling together solutions, there's likely a real need. ✴ No workarounds? The problem might not be pressing enough. Bonus: Pay attention to the frustrations people express with their DIY solutions. These pain points can guide your problem-solving approach. July was a hectic month, with lots of things in motion. 3 quick lessons I learned & 3 wins: [1] Don't f*ck with momentum Momentum can take several months to build and days to lose. Something we all know and understand. But it often takes you to experience something before it hits home. I was on a roll with marketing, but I took my foot off the gas every so slightly and immediately felt the impact. Lesson learned. In business, things like this cost $$$. [2] Simple scales Related to my last point, I've realised that I'm far more consistent when I simplify things. An example of this is the new startup chat video series I've been posting on here and YT. It's raw, unedited, filmed in one take. There will always be a voice demanding more 'wow' factor, but as complexity increases, less gets done. My new personal rule is to not complain or say X is hard until I've done at least 50 reps of X (content/campaigns/headlines/sales calls, etc.). [3] Do the non-energising stuff in the mornings There are two types of activities for me: things that give me energy and things that don't. For things that fit the first bucket, I can easily do 70+ hour weeks without relying on motivation. These are often creative tasks that I enjoy. For the second bucket, these are important tasks that often get pushed to the right and feel like a grind. I've learned to complete these tasks in the morning to get onto the stuff that feels like play. 3 wins from July: - Got engaged. Lots of joy & love. - Working with a new batch of founders. Experiments are More Important Than Perfection Get comfortable being uncomfortable: • Write daily • Publish daily • Iterate on your product Don’t wait. Start now. Hit send. Done > Perfect 3. Build a Content System Day 1 Content increases your surface area for luck. You need to build a system to: • Follow a content schedule • Build content formats • Formulate a funnel Stay consistent. Hit publish daily and good things happen. 4. Build Your Revenue Funnel The goal is to convert your dream customer to your product: • Rented audience: Attract your dream customer on Twitter and LinkedIn • Owned audience: Convert them to emails and SMS • Monetized audience: Get them to pay for your product 5. Excellence is a Habit You are what you continually do. The Super Bowl is won in the preseason. Your day begins the night before: • Curate your priorities before you go to bed • Wake up • Complete 3 big tasks • Go into nature • Come back and tackle more • Repeat 6. Fall in Love With The Process There is no shortcut to success. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Enjoy the small wins: • You wrote a draft. Great work. • You sent a big email. Great work. • You closed a small deal. Great work. Success is about stacking tiny wins. 7. Be Obsessed With Learning The most successful people are lifelong learners: • Learn from people on Twitter • Watch YouTube videos • Listen to podcasts “Anyone who stops learning is old, whether at twenty or eighty. Anyone who keeps learning stays young.” 8. Have a Bias for Action Get addicted to momentum. If you know you should do something, do it in 5 seconds: • Send the email • Write the post • Call that person • Express gratitude Don't wait. Life is too short.
