Credit Unions and Cybersecurity Programs Credit Unions, in my experience, have underdeveloped Cyber programs. This is primarily due to two key factors: 1. Lack of budget focus - The reality is that CU's don't put their focus or efforts in a Cyber program until it becomes absolutely required by NCUA. Leaders are left to pick a priority a slowly develop a gap prevention strategy. 2. Lack of experience - Cybersecurity is a full time job. Most leaders are focused on other aspects of CU business units and don't put enough focus into understanding the landscape and methodologies involved in a solid Cyber program. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the framework of a Cyber program that exceeds the requirements of the NCUA and regulators. Let me help fill in those gaps. When you’re a client-facing business, it’s all too easy to get caught up in working “in” the business, delivering great work for those you serve. But if our weekly pulse meeting at the end of April was any indication, that’s not a problem we have at Echelon Risk + Cyber. So many shoutouts were about teammates working “on” the business - for example, running internal cyber audits and checks on ourselves, getting new thought leadership out and published for our clients, and putting together our process for NPS evaluation with our clients. These projects don’t have immediate client impact, but they’re so important to us in the long run. And the rest of the shoutouts were about all the ways people went above and beyond for clients… which is, of course, business as usual for us. Two worlds of risks ... The reality for (re)insurance companies is that they are faced with two worlds of risks - traditional and cyber - to consider how to manage successfully. One important factor that (re)insurers must face is that having prior experience of successfully managing traditional risks may be necessary but is far from sufficient to successfully manage cyber risks.
