As always super Ted talk from Jonathan Foley - carbon neutrality will rely at 96% on GHG reduction. Changing our diet and tackling food waste are impactful actions we can take on individual levels. But also Investiments has to target a much wider scope than electrification of vehicles like for instance more sustainable and regenerative agrifood.
Climate change thought of the day... 💭 "Now is better than new, time is more important than tech" Stumbled on this from Jonathan Foley TED talk last night, it's only 10 minutes but worth everyone's time. It's clear and simple messaging; ✅ It is almost entirely about Fossil Fuels GHG emissions ✅ About 96% of what it takes to get to net zero is emission cuts ❗ ✅ About 76% of that, needs to happen in the next decade ❗ ✅ Quicker we act the quicker we reduce the cumulative impact Simple stages through to 2050 in timeline impact; 1️⃣ Emergency Brakes - impact solutions with no delays ⏩ methane leaks, deforestation, energy efficiency, transport, agriculture 2️⃣ Low Carbon Infrastructure - new future standards ⏩ Power systems, building and transport infrastructure 3️⃣ Nature-base Solutions - plant and restore ⏩ Carbon sinks, trees, oceans Carbon capture and removal - a footnote in the story, late to the party for giga-tonne scale and only needed for potentially mopping up at the end. Newsflash - we don't need it if we cut FF emissions in the first place! "More focus, less distraction." "We have lots of cheap solutions that cost less than fossil fuel based solutions and existing destructive agriculture practices." "8-9 million die per year from FF pollution" the health cost-benefit of cutting is enormous Also in there, is a great chart matching; Where we need to cut [science based portfolio] vs Where we are focusing [via IRA funding alignment] vs Where VC is investing [an eye-opener] ❌ Carbon v Capital misalignment is a major challenge. It reframes the simple. We know all this. The scientists can evidence all this. But we still arent getting it right. We aren't applying the right pressure in the right places to stem the bleeding. #climatetechnology #climatepriority #netzero https://lnkd.in/eT9k9Cgc

There's an urgent need to elevate the socioeconomic impacts of the net-zero transition. To guide leaders, we're developing a Climate Transition Impact Framework as a first step on a multiyear journey. The tools for climate action today focus on multiple aspects, but they often overlook the interconnection with factors like health and energy prices. The Climate Transition Impact Framework brings a comprehensive approach with modeling and data to help leaders understand the broader impacts of climate action on society. I'd recommend you to dive into our report to gain deeper insights: https://lnkd.in/dRzmc2XM #ClimateAction #NetZero #Sustainability

Last week, our climate risk experts Elisa Seith and Stuart Large led an insightful workshop at The Shift - 1st Corporate Climate Adaptation Conference (Nov 6th) exploring the critical role of high-quality climate data in business adaptation strategies. Key takeaways from the conference highlight a pivotal shift in corporate climate strategy: while mitigation remains crucial, adaptation can no longer wait. As one World Economic Forum speaker noted, climate adaptation's business impact parallels the internet revolution – organizations can either lead the transformation or risk being left behind. Thank you to all who participated in our workshop and to Daniel Schmitz-Remberg at The Shift for organizing this important dialogue. The engagement and follow-up discussions reinforce what we're seeing across industries: businesses are ready to move beyond optimistic technology-first thinking to embrace practical, data-driven adaptation strategies. #ClimateResilience #BusinessAdaptation #ClimateRisk #Sustainability #JupiterIntelligence

Climate impact scholar Johan Rockström says that the 2020s will see the largest economic transition in history and the only currency that matters is speed and scale: "The science is clear: the window is rapidly closing. But there is some light in this window. We actually have evidence that we've reached a pivotal point, not only in terms of risk but also in terms of opportunity. Linear change is no longer an option, the only option is exponential change. We know that the only currency that matters is speed and scale... We have so much evidence today that the solutions are not only available but if we implement them we get a more healthy, stable, secure future with the jobs and the economies that can compete and provide livelihoods into the future." One of the elements to achieve this speed and scale is carbon markets. Vlinder focuses on blue carbon removal credits with high socioeconomic focus—social blue carbon removal. Community-based restoration of mangrove ecosystems is one of the solutions Johan Rockström is talking about. The solution that works. https://lnkd.in/dnWKjXye #ClimateAction #BlueCarbon #Mangroves #EcosystemRestoration

BY 2030 WE'LL HAVE COLLECTIVELY CHOSEN ONE OF TWO FUTURES "There is no doubt that we are facing exponential impacts of climate change. There is also no doubt, however, that that is being met by exponential progress of the technologies that can help to address climate change," Christiana Figueres, co-architect of the Paris Agreement, in A New Climate Vision. TED Countdown. https://lnkd.in/g8dEns-Q So what we have here is a race between two exponential curves: negative compounding climate challenges, and exponentially increasing technology impact. By 2030, we will have collectively chosen between Door #1: dystopia, or Door #2: Humanity in balance with nature. Explore these options with us and paint a picture of a better future at our 'Swarm-style' Green Economy Conference. Wednesday 11/13/24, 8AM-4PM, live at L.A. CleanTech Incubator, DTLA or online. https://conta.cc/3Nhctxd

We are halfway through the 'decisive decade' (2020-2030) of Climate Action after almost nine years of the Paris Agreement. Climate impact scholar Johan Rockström offers the most up-to-date scientific assessment of the state of the planet and explains what must be done to preserve Earth's resilience to human pressure in this Ted Talk. I would recommend a watch. Key Highlights from the talk are: ➡ Acceleration in decadal increase in global mean temperatures. The increase from 1970 to 2014 was 0.18 degrees Celsius per decade, which abruptly jumped to 0.26 degrees Celsius per decade from 2014 onwards. With this pace, we will hit a two-degree rise in the coming 2 decades. ➡ Most parameters important for human well-being and our economies, like Ozone, Tropical forests, Water use, etc., have shown linear trajectory till the 1950s and later shown acceleration leading to overconsumption and depletion. Major results include depletion of water resources, ozone depletion, sixth mass extinction, etc. ➡ Buffering capacity - the Earth system's ability to absorb shocks and stress has been impacted in recent decades. Most forests are losing their carbon storage capacity, and the oceans, which absorb 90% of global heat, are losing resilience. ➡ Economic costs touched 200 billion dollars alone in 2023. We will suffer an 18% loss to Global GDP, i.e. 38 trillion dollars, by 2050. ➡ We are on a path of self-amplified heating of the planet as we cross the tipping points. The video is much more detailed and explains things in charts. A watch that opens the eyes to the impact we are going through in the climate era. Health industry CEOs report making strides on climate actions, indicating the greatest progress on improving energy efficiency. However, few of them have plans for nature-based climate solutions. Leaders should look for opportunities in nature-positive business models that go beyond decarbonization.
