One Man whose Vision transformed Financial Transparency and Accountability! Louis Brandeis, a renowned Supreme Court Justice and legal scholar, revolutionized the financial world with his advocacy for transparency and accountability. He is known for his famous quote : "Sunlight is the best disinfectant.". Before Brandeis, financial transparency was nearly non existent. Companies didn't publish their financial documents, leaving investors in the dark. His seminal book, Other People's Money and How the Bankers Use It (1914), exposed these practices and called for openness. Brandeis's efforts were pivotal in President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal reforms, leading to the establishment of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 1934. This monumental shift required companies to disclose their financial information. By 1935, nearly 4,600 companies registered with the SEC, providing investors with unprecedented access to financial data. Today, over 8,000 publicly traded companies in the U.S. must regularly disclose detailed financial statements. This has resulted in a more robust and trustworthy financial system. Brandeis's legacy lives on in every financial report and investor decision, underscoring the enduring impact of his vision for a transparent financial world.
