AFN Bank On Arkansas+ Director Kara Wilkins reflects on Anna Gifty Opoku-Agyeman's powerful words that challenged attendees to reflect on where and how data will be sourced in the years to come while encouraging grantmakers to think beyond only providing financial resources to institutions and instead become transformational leaders for systemic change. As AFN celebrates its 20th Anniversary, and looks forward to the next 20 years, it embraces the words of Opoku-Agyeman and invites funders to join them in intentionally centering economic equity and confronting racial bias in asset building, including reframing and restructuring the approach to research and data. Today, we're sharing part 2/5 of key insights that guide our efforts in reshaping narratives for a brighter, more inclusive future for Arkansas. 4️⃣ Power & Philanthropy → Philanthropy Pays, but Power Costs—The philanthropic sector is unique in its ability to influence stakeholders already in positions of power; however, narrative change with an equity lens requires power and capacity building among the most marginalized and often disregarded populations—which is a long-term investment and must be community-led. 5️⃣ Measurement Matters → Measurement is an Art and a Science— utilizing some strategic comms measurement frames is helpful in the beginning phases of shifting narratives. The next iterations must be a delicate balance of relationship building, relevant research, and creating/connecting infrastructure - from which initial signs of impact can be explored but not predicted. Missed Lessons 1-3? Check out our post from 5/30 to get caught up. #EquityinAction #NarrativeChange #WRF #RelentlessPursuit

Along with facilitating my ‘Roots of Racism’ workshop last week, I was asked to share some information about the histories of violence Indigenous folks have had to historically endure in a presentation to the Immigrant Advisory Council of the North Shore Immigrant Inclusion Partnership at Impact North Shore. After exploring some key historical events and policies, I concluded my presentation with the question: can we fix the past? Violence, as we know, leaves a long and winding trail behind it. There are legacies created by experiencing such harm that flood from one generation to the next. And when violence is done, it cannot be undone and so, ultimately, the answer must be no - we cannot fix the past. However, what we must know from listening to the communities at the forefront of the fight for safety and justice is that the first step to repairing harm is acknowledging that harm exists. So while we cannot fix the past, in hopes of a future that holds space for the prosperity of the cultures and peoples that were harmed, I urge you to not forget it. With Truth and Reconciliation Day just around the corner, a lot of us might be wondering what tangible steps we can take to contribute and consolidate our commitment to action. Here are some ideas I shared with the group: 📚Educate ourselves - attend workshops and do your own research about what is at the core of Truth and Reconciliation 🫂Go to community events and gatherings 💰Keep money moving, when you can - donate to organizations supporting Indigenous communities 📣 Raise awareness in your communities 🧠 Challenge your own beliefs and biases 🧡 And most importantly, lead with love, for love is at the root of all growth and repair. Reconciliation is a great, everlasting journey and we are only at the beginning. I hope you feel inclined to take some steps forward (or back, if needed) and commit to learning and unlearning with me.

I'm so proud of the Edward W. Hazen Foundation's final report highlighting lessons from grantees as the foundation closes after nearly 100 years of grantmaking in the education justice sector and funding youth leaders organizing to lead fights for racial justice and systemic change nationwide. You have to check it out. Thank you Grantmakers for Effective Organizations (GEO) for giving this report a home so our peers can access it long after Hazen's closure. Preview: "Many of our peers are far along in examining their grantmaking philosophy and practice. Others are just beginning. Still, others are stuck, unsure of the risk they are willing to take to use their power to challenge the fields we have helped sustain. We hope that this report serves as a stepping stone for action. To our peers in #philanthropy, we urge you to question the assumptions rooted in privileges that have been passed down to us. We risk causing more harm by perpetuating an inequitable system than by attempting to change it." Link to download the report: https://lnkd.in/eZPJAYQE

Put good business practices into action to help make a difference with your organization at https:better-cash-management.com https://lnkd.in/g_Tc8HrV
With so much emphasis on your mission, your nonprofit may struggle with remembering that it is still a business that has to have a bottom line in the black. Nonprofits often put their social impact goals at the forefront and their business objectives second, which is fine until there is not enough coming in to cover what is going out. We can find extra cash flow and improve operational efficiency. Book a free consultation at https:better-cash-management.com
