Don’t Rush Your Growth: Embrace the Journey As we conclude IEEE CONECCT 2024, the flagship event of the IEEE BANGALORE SECTION, IEEE CONECCT 2024 was more than just a congregation of brilliant minds; it was where the magic of innovation, collaboration, and learning happened. Volunteering with IEEE is a unique opportunity to build networks, develop leadership skills, and contribute to the global engineering community's efforts to advance technology for humanity. Our volunteers are the backbone of any IEEE event, and CONECCT 2024 was no exception. I would like to share some key takeaways for our aspiring leaders, drawn from my experience working closely with many dedicated student volunteers who worked together to make this conference a success: Aspiring leaders should embrace patience, recognizing that true growth is gradual and achieved through steady, incremental progress. Reflecting on both successes and failures is crucial for extracting valuable lessons while building strong relationships through networking and mentorship, which provides guidance from those with experience. Celebrating small wins is essential, as these achievements, no matter how minor, are important milestones in the journey of personal and professional growth. As I pen these, I would like to share an anecdote. Early in my career, I, too, was eager to climb the ranks quickly. I remember working with a mentor who shared a powerful story from his experience: "When I first became a manager, I was keen to prove my worth and rushed into decisions. An experienced colleague advised, 'Leadership isn't about how fast you make decisions, but how wisely.' I didn't understand it then, but over time, I realized that thoughtful deliberation often leads to better outcomes. True leadership growth lies not in haste but in constant, mindful progression. It's about learning from each step, embracing setbacks, and celebrating each small win along the way." Let’s embrace the journey of growth with patience and perseverance. Remember, the tallest trees in the forest didn’t grow overnight. Let’s root ourselves in strong principles and allow ourselves the time to flourish. I think of curiosity as a kind of super-power, especially when it comes to growth and leadership development.  When you’re curious, you’re motivated to learn and seek out understanding. Curiosity fuels better collaboration and improves your interactions with others. It’s powerful! My own curiosity was piqued when I saw The Greater Good Science Center had developed a quiz to explore how curiosity might differ based on factors such as age, political views and background.   One of the things it found was that curiosity plateaus after your 30s, which interested me. One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned in academia and research is the importance of being open to criticism. In the past few years, I’ve actively sought out feedback, not just from mentors but from peers and even those outside my field, to gain a 360° view of my work. I'm the "What do you think?" kind of person This openness has challenged my thinking, improved my approaches, and allowed me to see things from perspectives I hadn’t considered. I think curiosity is the ultimate superpower. In leadership and in life in general. Curiosity is having the humility and openness to willingly and continuously learn from the world and all the wonderful and crazy people in it. It’s about leaving ego at the door and saying -  “I don’t know” or “what do you think?” (the 7 most important words in leadership). It’s about being confident enough to be vulnerable in front of others, and to admit to uncertainty, ignorance or a lack of skills. It suggests we should examine our assumptions, opinions, and belief systems. It’s about a willingness to develop and to change course when the evidence presents itself. I think it’s sadly lacking in much of modern business. When David Hieatt asked me to do a talk at The DO Lectures back in 2014 I used photography as a way in to raise a call to arms for curiosity. So much so, and thanks to Justin Bovington, it led me directly to Goldsmiths to undertake an MA in Photography and Urban Cultures, a transition move which changed my life immeasurably for the better. I’m thinking a lot about transformation and transitions at the moment as the chaos of unexpected change gets increasingly prevalent. One of the reasons my reward from Goldsmiths was so great, was precisely because it provided me with another positive facet of curiosity – the transcendence of fear and insecurity that appears simply by getting in the ring and starting something novel. Seeing the potential chaos but walking towards it rather than away. Add to that the feeling of jeopardy that accompanies doing something seemingly non-conforming or non-compliant, and we get a powerful cocktail for growth. For me choosing to study art as a 46-year-old real estate developer was a game changer. Paradoxically the very thing I worried would negatively impact my business, was the very thing that gave it it’s unique and impactful edge. So I think the power of unbounded creativity in business is under-estimated. Curiosity and imagination are the gateway drugs to creativity (which is the necessary precursor ingredient in innovation). Loving the post from Dan, that captures similar essence that we have been posting about. Continuing with the #BlankPageAnxiety series with a same message coming in from so many creators out there. Have you noticed how good ideas are in the air? It is like God sending out tweets and people you'll contact will catch it in the ether, so the same message comes to you through many different channels? Since we just got over it, and we don't plan to stop, but rather go all in on our mission. Our project is so inspiring and challenging... I would say it is the most rewarding of all. It has so much of it, that all, who come to join and take on the quest, will be rewarded to the fullest of their imagination and yearnings. Because there is one quest we all share. And that we, the Conscious Leaders, will have to bring to life. We are the creators in life. So get up from your book and get to action! I spent years and years in that stage. (You know, back in my hermit stage, living 7 years off-grid as I wrote and will write more about.) Having all the knowledge, being addicted to learning and absorbing up so much knowledge as possible, as it were a shortage of this and I had to hoard it all to protect myself. The carrot is always 1m away from you Chasing security out of fear is a road, that's failed with understanding the essence of life. When we never stop and find peace within, we end up running in the custom paths, that the programming fed to us. We are studying everybody else, We are consuming and reacting rather than creating. Curiosity is not among the core leadership skills we often discuss; however, it regularly appears as one of the most vital personality characteristics. There are many definitions and views of and reflections on curiosity. The one below from “Dare to Lead” by Brene Brown gives another angle on this skill. She says that curiosity is an act of vulnerability and courage. Researchers are finding evidence that curiosity is correlated with creativity, intelligence, improved learning and memory, and problem-solving. A study published in the October 2014 issue of the journal Neuron suggests that the brain’s chemistry changes when we become curious, helping us to learn better and to retain information. Also, what is interesting is that curiosity is uncomfortable because it involves uncertainty and vulnerability. Obviously, it is more convenient for us to stay within known facts, habits, and ways of working rather than to be curious. Vulnerability means you need to admit that you don’t know; you are a beginner, and it can be quite difficult for successful and mature leaders and professionals. I have seen so many adults struggling to learn a new language just because they don’t want to look silly when they start speaking, and without speaking they can’t learn. Curiosity is a key to improvement. It is a spark within us that drives us to seek out new information, experiences, and understanding. It is quite easy to stay curious in Electrolux, as we have many discussions about new products and their features, many business models and channels that we operate, data to explore the different angles of any topic, a diverse team with 27 nationalities in one building and much more.  So, let's stay curious! #Electrolux #ElectroluxAPMEA #ElectroluxGroup

Sometimes this can make me feel uneasy and helpless. And alone we have very little power. But together this changes. In Amsterdam on Friday and Saturday the energy was up. Tomorrow University Community Immersion Meetup was happening. Bringing together change makers, leaders and innovators. Collaborating on creating a better future. 𝗜𝘁 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗳𝘂𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹. 🙌 This is what changes the future. Working together is a superpower. But it's easier to say than to master. And I learned just by trial and error. Like many social skills, where collaboration is just a part of. Collaboration includes persuasion and negotiation, conflict management, collaborative partnerships and teamwork.
