The research found that Gen Z and Millennial consumers are much less enthusiastic about them than industry executives think they are. And while disclosure is important when GenAI has been used in advertising, (31% of consumers are more likely to trust a company that's upfront about it), 27% would trust a company less if they learned it was using AI in ads. https://lnkd.in/ecJEDYmY Happy Advertising Week. This week, you’re not going to see a topic more dominant on the advertising landscape than the role of Artificial Intelligence in the ad business. The topic can be disorienting and it can contain a lot of pitfalls that seem particularly suited to people who are used to using technology to disrupt entire industries. To help you avoid these pitfalls, let me tell you a bit about the framework I use to evaluate AI-related arguments. In the MGM logo, right above the lion’s head, there’s a little banner with some Latin on it: Ars Gratia Artis – “Art for Art’s sake.” History has interpreted that phrase in a number of different ways in different contexts. I interpret it to mean that the creative act is an end unto itself. That is, it has intrinsic value. We create, in part, because the creative act helps us navigate our emotions and process the challenges in an around us. If you’ve ever written in a journal or made a painting or piece of music because it helped you process something, you know exactly what I’m talking about. You’ve seen art from the inside looking out. The rest of us might be looking from the outside in. And the tendency – an awful one in my estimation – is that art’s value is measured solely by its commercial success. If you create, you know that’s not true. So, as you’re having your conversations about the role of AI on the modern business landscape, please think deeply about how we value art, and whether our assessments of it are on the mark or not. Don’t forget about the intrinsic value of art and the appreciation we have for it when art touches us in a way that evokes how it helped its creator. The subreddit I’ve linked is seemingly depressing, encouraging and thought-provoking all at the same time, but it’s a place where I’ve begun to see the arguments for and against AI in the art world begin to be broken down along the lines I’m describing.
