The calmness of nature reminded me of the importance of taking a step back to see the bigger picture in both life and work. During my current break following what I’ll call the 20-year “first half” of my career, I’ve taken some time to reflect on the great fortunes I've had while coming up through the ranks up to my past decade or so serving as an Executive-level leader. That progression simply never could have happened without others repeatedly making bets (and taking risks!) on me and my teams in very big ways to go solve complex problems. And while I’m not shy about saying we’ve repeatedly proven them wise in their confidence with a long track record of delivering exceptional results, I am also deeply grateful for the resourcing and support they’ve provided me personally in these pursuits. Realistically, no one does that kind of tough stuff alone, no matter how smart you may think you are (note to the 'up-and-comers' - it's best to lean into that early). Because of my various senior roles and these supporters, I’ve had the great fortune to work with the top experts in a wide variety of disciplines. From those on the leading edges of aviation technology, to pioneers in sustainability, brilliant financial thinkers, skilled tradespeople and engineers, efficiency masterminds, training and safety zealots, expert communicators and innovators of many other forms, I have been serendipitously partnered with the best in the world to do a lot of big, bold things (with more to come, of course! 😉) I’m grateful for these connections that expanded my own knowledge and capabilities so rewardingly, but gratitude alone only goes so far. I feel strongly compelled to continue to share knowledge with others as it’s been shared with me, even while I’m still working out the next official chapter for myself. So, inspired by some feedback from smart folks close to me, I’m going share some of what I’ve learned here in a series of articles designed for a general audience that will try to distill some of the more interesting and complex topics I’ve worked on in a simple and hopefully engaging way as a gesture of appreciation (and hopefully, added contribution to all of you). Tomorrow I'll share my first piece here, a short article to demystify the often confusing and politically murky concept of “carbon footprints”. Specifically what is really being measured (or estimated) in a practical sense, the confusing bit of “Scope 1/2/3”, how I see the space evolving next, and why it should matter to you. It's an accessible summary intro on the topic by design – so apologies in advance to any of the aforementioned experts in my connections who may see it!
