Does it matter whether you’re called Melissa or Rahul? It does if you want to do a PhD at Australia’s most prestigious universities. They’re supposed to be places where all students can learn, free from discrimination. But many overseas and Australian studies have shown racism is both a historical and ongoing problem. The main way people start an academic career is via a doctoral degree – but getting your foot in the door might depend on what your name sounds like. An email from “Melissa Smith” was far more likely to get a positive response than an identical email from “Grace Chen Jinyan” (six percentage points lower) or “Omar al-Haddad” (nine percentage points lower). The most dramatic gap was in the positive response rates to Melissa Smith, compared with “Rahul Kumar”. The rate of positive responses to Melissa was 12 percentage points higher than for Rahul. Wow, it's been a busy 24 hours in the campus #stopantisemitism space. Let's start with the guide issued yesterday by the American Council of Trustees and Alumni. The guide recognizes that last spring, many universities struggled to address #antiIsraeli #encampments and other acts. Supporters of the encampments defended actions under the #guise of #freespeech and many administrators were ill-equipped to counter these claims. ACTA suggests universities should clearly communicate policies and consequences--and enforce them. It also suggests that Boards of Trustees resist calls to divest and other pressure campaigns against universities by unruly students. Hmm, seems like a lot of University presidents, administrators and Boards have one more addition to their summer reading lists.
