If you’re in your 20s and in medicine, here’s my advice: Don’t chase money just yet. It’s tempting to take the highest-paying offer after all those years of school and training. But the reality is, your 20s aren’t when you’ll reach your earning peak. That comes later - your 30s, 40s, and beyond. Right now, focus on building a foundation that will set you up for a career you’ll love. Optimize for: → Experience: Choose opportunities where you can learn the most, even if the pay is less. → Knowledge: Ask questions, take on challenges, and never stop being curious. → People: Surround yourself with colleagues, mentors, and peers who inspire and push you. → Balance: Medicine is demanding, but don’t forget to actually live your life, too. If you’re deciding between a high-paying role with little mentorship OR A lower-paying role with the chance to work under an experienced physician in your desired specialty. Take the latter. Why? Because in 10 years, you won’t remember the pay difference. You’ll remember the growth, the lessons, and the network you built. And while you’re at it, don’t forget to: - Eat good food. - Travel to new places. - Spend time with friends who make you laugh. Medicine is a calling, but it’s also a journey. To thrive in it long-term, you need to invest in both your career and your well-being. Here’s the kicker: If you focus on learning, relationships, and experiences now, the money will come. Chasing money is short-term; chasing knowledge builds a lifetime of wealth. Adebayo Fasanya, MD
It’s so easy to get distracted by immediate rewards, but investing in your knowledge and network now will absolutely pay dividends later.
Couldn’t agree more with this Adebayo. Early in my career, I prioritized opportunities where I could learn and grow over the paycheck, and looking back, it made all the difference. The mentors I worked with and the experiences I gained shaped everything that came after. Great advice for anyone starting out!
Congrats on being the leader you are. Many fields need more people like you 👍
Foundation beats quick gains every time, especially in medicine.
You forgot and watch your children grow.

3wLove this, Adebayo. I see the same thing when talking to doctors about their finances. Early on, it’s all about getting the basics right—things like protecting your income and building a safety net. It’s not flashy, but it makes a huge difference down the road. Just like choosing mentorship and growth over the quick paycheck, taking small, smart steps early on sets you up for a way better future.
