It was just another day at the mall, and I was putting the cart back. I saw many carts all over the place, some just leaving erratically a few feet from cart stowage. The Shopping Cart Theory got me thinking about the reliability of people at work. After using a cart, people can either return it or leave it. There’s neither a reward nor any punishment—it’s just about doing the right thing. This small action speaks volumes about someone’s sense of responsibility. In the hiring stage, how can we look for people who “return the cart” daily? These are the ones who close loose ends, take ownership, and go the extra mile—even when no one’s watching. It’s not about checking tasks off a list; it’s about commitment to the team’s success. I believe some targeted questions about past actions can reveal this quality. But what would they be? Can you help me! I thought of a few and added them in comments.
