Facing Financial Challenges with Dignity: A Lesson from My Parents Growing up, I witnessed firsthand how my mother and father navigated financial difficulties with grace and self-respect. But it was my mother, in particular, who taught me the true meaning of resilience. When I was about 10 or 11 years old, our family faced tough times. During this time, my mother's cousin, who was recovering from a paralysis attack, stayed with us. In those days, it wasn't common for a brother to stay at his daughter's or daughter-in-law's house, but my mother welcomed him without hesitation. She not only took care of him and his family but also shared a quiet strength. Recognizing our financial struggles, her uncle (cousin’s father) offered something invaluable: a skill. During the summer holidays, he taught my mother how to make fritters and papad—a skill that became a new source of income for our family. Over the next several years, this small skill turned into a lifeline, helping us weather difficult times and improve our financial situation. It was a powerful reminder that even in adversity, dignity, resourcefulness, and a willingness to learn can open doors to new opportunities. Just as in accounting, where we balance assets and liabilities, let’s consider kindness as an asset in the ledger of life. The investment might seem small, but the returns are immeasurable.
