With a typical #3Dprinter, parameters for standard materials may be preset, but users must manually set up to 100 parameters in order to print a new material from scratch. This means that #renewable and #recyclable materials, whose properties can fluctuate based on their composition, are difficult to use. Researchers, however, have now developed a printer that can automatically identify the parameters of an unknown material on its own. At the Engineering Design Show (EDS) 2024, Stephen Driver FInstCT of Studio29 Factory31 and Jiva Materials Ltd will discuss biodegradable printed circuit boards (PCBs). Traditional PCBs are non-recyclable, release toxins when incinerated and waste valuable metals. Jiva’s Soluboard, made from natural fibers and soluble polymers, offers similar performance to traditional PCBs but is biodegradable, easing end-of-life management. Steve's presentation will highlight Soluboard’s sustainability benefits, including lower carbon footprint (thanks in part to reduced soldering temperatures) and stress the importance of considering end-of-life processes during the initial design stage.
