#HaveYouHerd: Today is Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a time to celebrate and honor the rich cultures, contributions, and resilience of Native American communities. Originally introduced as a counter to Columbus Day, Indigenous Peoples' Day serves to reclaim history and shine a light on the true experiences of America’s first inhabitants. It represents not only a celebration but also a moment to reflect on centuries of resistance, resilience, and continued advocacy for justice and recognition. While the federal government has officially recognized it since 2021, many states and cities still do not observe the holiday. But for the communities that celebrate, it’s a powerful reminder of the strength and impact of Indigenous peoples throughout history and today. Let’s continue to elevate Indigenous voices, support Native-led initiatives, and commit to learning more about the diverse tribal nations that shape our country’s cultural fabric.

This day honors the resilience of Native Americans and Indigenous peoples who continue to thrive despite the injustices they have faced, and acknowledges the ongoing efforts of Native communities to reclaim their culture, identity, and visibility. Indigenous traditions remain vibrant and essential. We also recognize the challenges faced by tribes, many of which are no longer federally recognized due to complex regulations. It’s crucial to raise awareness about the policies affecting Native populations and to advocate for their visibility in society. https://lnkd.in/gbrHVajJ

Title: Scream for Justice: The Voice of the Oppressed It is crucial for every culture of Black and Brown heritage to disrupt, to interrupt, to voice, to pursue, and to engage—all through legal means—to assert their rights. When colonizing nations like New Zealand fail to listen, it is time to summon the voices of our ancestors. Scream. Scream. Scream until they hear us. Demand recognition of the rights of the people. Remind the colonizers that they are outsiders, planted on this land by force. Remind them that their presence is not essential. If they left tomorrow, we would reshape and rebuild the land in the image of our forefathers’ dreams and memories. Colonizers often look baffled, as if they cannot fathom or recall the rich histories of the people they oppressed. But our fathers and mothers—the true stewards of this land—deserve a voice. And so we scream, loudly and relentlessly, proclaiming our rights from the past into the present, as the rightful natives of this land. Scream until they cannot ignore us. Scream until justice prevails. All rights reserved, Dr. Bryan K. Hickman, 2024. #IndigenousRights #Decolonize #SocialJustice #BlackAndBrownVoices #NativeHeritage #FightForJustice #LandRights #Colonization #IndigenousResilience #CulturalRevival #HumanRights #EqualityNow #AncestralVoices #DecolonizingMinds #EndOppression #GlobalJustice #ReclaimTheLand #CommunityStrength #ResistanceThroughUnity #JusticeForAll

As we honor Indigenous Peoples Day, we reflect on the lasting impact of settler colonialism and the ongoing struggles Indigenous communities continue to face. The theft of Indigenous land is not just a historical event but an ongoing reality that demands accountability and action. Recognizing the genocides unfolding across the world today, we are reminded of the deep parallels between the violence faced by First Nations peoples globally and the urgent need for a united commitment to human rights. At the Women’s Foundation of California, our work is rooted in the values of Alegría, Power, and Belonging as we build a multigenerational, cross-cultural movement for healthy, safe, and prosperous communities. We go beyond acknowledgment by taking concrete actions to support rematriation and return land to Indigenous hands. In partnership with Indigenous-led organizations, we are committed to returning stolen land and upholding Indigenous sovereignty. Together, with Alegría, strength, and solidarity, we are building a feminist future that honors Indigenous rights and restores justice. Read more on our blog: https://lnkd.in/ggkH9TED
