Degree awarding powers for the Dyson Institute, that's what I call an exciting development in the UK higher education landscape. Elsewhere, industry embedded university degrees have been around for decades: you draw a salary, you earn a degree, chances are you might be taken on afterwards .. what's not to like? When it comes to engineering, the cross-over with business dimensions right from the start is particularly important. The UK had a proud tradition at the 'polytechnics' of the 1970s of offering blended degrees of precisely that kind, and I have met a good number of practitioners over the years who stressed how crucial these degrees were in launching their careers at the innovation interface, where successful engineering and management teams need to combine seamlessly for promising inventions to evolve into marketable products. Many of the current crop of 'sandwich' courses are a pale shadow of that tradition, and not just because in place of a salary, students are typically asked to pay for the privilege. As to the latest fashion of 'degree apprenticeships': well if it is a degree and if it can be embedded, why muddy the waters and call it 'apprenticeship', thereby further devaluing 'non-degree' apprenticeships which have a hard enough stance in the market already? The MEng degree at the Dyson Institute is a fresh approach and one that will hopefully be copied by other major players in the engineering and other sectors before long.
