How much time do you spend thinking about doors? Not much I would guess. Unless they break your flow. Imagine walking up to a door with a handle and trying to pull it and then realizing that it needs to be pushed to open. The push plate is an incredibly simple solution for this - but there are so many times it’s not used and you will find a handle instead. Why? Someone did not think it though from the perspective of the person using the door. (Maybe it looked nice??) Here’s another example: You walk onto an elevator and no one else is there. The door is not shutting. So you do the logical thing and push the close door button to speed things along. The door does not close immediately. But in time it closes and you just think the door is slow. This time someone did think about you. Just not the way you may have hoped. Many of the close door buttons on elevators don’t actually do anything. They are placebos. They make you feel better. Like your actions made a difference. If you are someone who makes things that others will experience it matters how you craft that experience. How? Try to shift your thinking from "Does this work?" to... "Does this work well for the people experiencing it?"
