It was initially measured by sailors using a “log-line” - a rope with evenly spaced knots attached to a log. The log was thrown overboard, and the number of knots that passed through the sailor’s hands in a specific time interval (usually measured by a sandglass) determined the vessel’s speed. This method, which evolved over centuries, eventually standardized the knot as a unit equal to one nautical mile per hour. One knot is equal to one nautical mile per hour, which is approximately 1.15 statute miles per hour or 1.85 kilometers per hour. Imagine cruising through the beautiful Strait of Gibraltar when suddenly—BAM! A pod of orcas rams your yacht until it starts taking on water and sinks. It sounds like a plot twist, right? Well, this happened just recently to a small 15-metre sailboat. Since 2020, there have been nearly 700 interactions between these majestic creatures and boats around the Iberian Peninsula. Some say it's the orcas teaching their young or maybe even exacting revenge. Who really knows? The incident left the yacht, Alboran Cognac, sinking while a nearby oil tanker rescued its two passengers. The orcas, particularly the Iberian subspecies, seem to know exactly what they're doing, often targeting the rudder. Experts recommend stopping the boat and letting go of the rudder if orcas start interacting with your vessel. This 'usually' causes them to lose interest. And whatever you do, don't try to fight back—remember, the open sea is their home, not ours.
