How the (insert your explicative of choice) do you plan an offsite for 50 people spread across the world?? Ironically, it was easier for us than planning one for 15.. As a team spanning 4 continents, offsites have been a huge pillar of Superfiliate's culture for the last 3.5 years. But, the thought of planning one for 50 people was pretty intimidating (and expensive) when I first thought about it. Somehow, we ended up doing it in 4 weeks... With the amount of momentum inside the company right now and the scale with which we're operating, our team could no longer handle the burden of every little logistical detail. And we shouldn't - there are better uses of everyone's time. So we started analyzing the many platforms and groups out there who do this for a living. While many of them were great, in true Superfiliate fashion, we decided to roll our own. We found an absolutely INCREDIBLE all-inclusive resort that will handle every last detail from airport transportation to meals to activities. They'll even help us organize a more formal team dinner where spouses and partners of teammates can join, and make it a really special experience for not just our teammates but the people most important to them as well. It's not the cheapest option from a cash perspective, but all things considered it was an obvious decision for us. As you grow up, you start to optimize for different things, and opportunity costs become much more real. Can't wait to share some photos when we get this incredible group together in a few months!

Week One at Macy’s: Lessons in Growth and Authority In my first weeks at Macy’s, I’ve learned a major lesson: I know what I’m doing.🙌🏾 For so long, I’ve been looking for external validation—someone to tell me, “You’re doing a good job.” But the truth is, I’m doing my job, and I’m doing it well. 💪🏾 This is my first role without micromanagement, and it’s been an eye-opener. 👀 Micromanagement, while suffocating at times, also acts as a safety net, offering guardrails I didn’t realize I leaned on. Now, I’ve been pushed out there—no training wheels—and I’m learning that those wheels, while small, are sometimes necessary for education, stability, and confidence-building. 🚲✨ I’m stepping into this role fully, embracing the responsibility that comes with it. This article hits on SUCH an important point. FAR too many people have never worked an entry-level service industry job and skipped straight to college and a “white collar” career. I learned SO much working at Starbucks (back when we had to manually pull 30 second shots) and my wife learned so much working third shift at Waffle House. People who skip this stage fail to learn those valueable lessons and it often shows in how they approach their careers later on. Yesterday, at Disney World, we saw SO many cast members who were in college working in the park. They defied ALL stereotypes about Gen Z and were hard working and had AMAZING personalities. They are precisely who we need in the work force!! Companies need to find ways to identify recent grads who have actual real work experience in service industry jobs and give them preference in hiring instead of focusing on internships and elite colleges.

If you are in real estate in Central Ohio there was a lot to celebrate this week: 1) A globally recognized manufacturing project, receiving federal support & securing a major new partnership, which brought renewed confidence to a generational opportunity. 2) A leading global employer declaring that culture is not a birthright- its something that need to be worked at & that the office plays a part in strengthening a company’s culture. 3)The Fed cutting it’s rate by half a point-calming some of the major headwinds facing developers & creating momentum to get back to building. And last but not least- the opening of Butcher & Rose for lunch service-which based on today’s attendance will be one of THE spot for a “downtown power lunch”. The future is bright!

When asked whether I want the medium or large pizza, I always go big. When buying a new TV the same bias plays out (could a tv be too big?). I’ve been conditioned to believe that big is always better. As my career progressed, I found that the closer my roles took me towards the corporate headquarters the greater the burdens of bureaucracy and egos. I remember fondly the peace that I felt during my Disney Cruise Line days, when I was on board the ship deep in the Caribbean. When I joined the Disneyland team the moat around my castle consisted of the traffic congestion from Burbank to Anaheim. That wasn’t quite the defense that I had hoped for because the people senior to me all had drivers. To be fair, it was a small contingent seeking a photo op that would spoil my mood; others were strong supporters of what we were doing. Such is the reality in the world of large corporations. There is no denying that what I learned at Disney was invaluable and prepared me for life outside the kingdom, but there came a time to move on. When I joined Cedar Fair (now Six Flags….) I knew my world was going to be different in a lot of ways. Cedar Fair’s valuation was a fraction of Disney’s and lacked the wealth of resources that Disney could bring to bear. At Disney, the brand was front-and-center in every conversation. Cedar Fair didn’t have a consumer brand, it relied on the consumer loyalty to the individual parks. There is a much longer list of what my new employer didn’t have, but fortunately that included the absence of the bureaucratic burdens I mentioned above. As the CEO of Cedar Fair, I found a freedom that just isn’t available in large corporations. The team I inherited was as talented as those I worked with in Orlando and Anaheim. They didn’t have experience dealing with the scale of the larger parks, but the breadth of their individual responsibilities was greater – it had to be, there were a lot fewer of them. Every one of the senior team reported directly to me, there were no double-dotted-lines or confused loyalties. Cedar Fair will never have the level of resources that exist at a Disney or Universal. Where it shines over those giants is the productivity of each member of the team. Fewer people, means fewer layers, means fewer meetings, means more empowerment, means more accountability and arguably more fun. A small group of us made the decisions, tasked the operators to bring those decisions to life and lived with the consequences. No one competed for the credit when things went well, we were all in it together. I still believe bigger is always better when it comes to pizzas and tv’s, but at least for one chapter of my career, less was more. P.S. Whether you are in a big company, or a smaller one always ask yourself are you still learning? Are you gaining skills and making yourself more valuable? Adding tools to your toolbox is the key to moving forward.

Each trip is fueled by my own goals, my own vision, and my own intentionality. I was 19 years old when I took my first business trip to Frankfurt, Germany, as the Associate Department Lead at Fortunoff for Villeroy & Boch. It was a whirlwind, and I felt both terrified and exhilarated. Fast forward to a few years later, I found myself jet-setting across the globe, from Europe to Asia, as a Product Development Manager for Bed Bath and Beyond. Back then, I thought I had it all figured out. But life had other plans. This week marks 4 years since I was laid off from that corporate life. If you had told me then that I'd be traveling for business, but this time for my own business, I would have laughed it off. But here I am, stacking up the miles once again. I know you've been and are watching and it’s easy to think this journey has been seamless, but here are three things that most often get wrong about my story: One, this didn’t happen overnight. Building something for yourself takes time, and there were moments of doubt, fear, and even failure. Two, it hasn't just been about working hard. It has been about working intentionally. Every move I’ve made in the past four years has been driven by a clear purpose. Three, the freedom to travel and work on my terms didn’t just land in my lap. It came from leveraging the power of personal branding and the internet, crafting a presence that resonates and connects with the right people. This isn’t just about stacking miles; it’s about stacking the right opportunities. In today’s world, we have the tools at our fingertips to create our own paths. Your personal brand is powerful, and when used with intention, it can take you places you never imagined. So, as I stand here at the gate, waiting for yet another flight, I’m reminded that this journey is one I’m designing myself...and it’s just the beginning. I am one of those oddballs who gets excited on a Sunday night about knowing I've got work the next day. Much to my other half's bafflement, I might add. And I thought this week would be a prime example of why. This week I have the pleasure of helping Bluebird Care define their employer brand, ODEON Cinemas Group develop their shiny new careers website, Lidl GB creatively launch their new EVP, the green light to support on a piece of work close to my heart (animal related!), all whilst finishing off judging some incredible (and numerous!) RMAward entries. And we're only halfway through the week. Yes there's a lot to do, no it's not always plain sailing, but it's bloomin' good fun and you know the work is having a positive impact. And yep I'm aware some is name-dropping in this post. But I'm proud of it. Proud to do what I do, to be part of a business that delivers exceptional work, and proud of the clients I get to work with. It gives Monday - Friday and beyond clear purpose. The point of this post (and of employer branding in general) is simply, I hope everyone can do something they love, and as the old cliché goes, it shouldn't then feel like work.
