Understanding the Relationship Between Velocity Pressure and Static Pressure in HVAC Systems In the world of HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, understanding the interplay between different types of pressure is crucial for efficient system design, operation, and troubleshooting. Two important concepts in this context are velocity pressure and static pressure. This article will explore their definitions, how they relate to each other, and their implications for HVAC system performance. Definitions Velocity Pressure: Velocity pressure is the pressure exerted by the motion of air as it flows through a duct. It is a measure of the kinetic energy of the air and is expressed in inches of water column (in. w.c.) or Pascals (Pa). Velocity pressure is determined by the speed of the air in the duct; as airflow increases, so does the velocity pressure. Static Pressure: Static pressure is the pressure exerted by the air within the duct system when it is at rest. It reflects the potential energy of the air and is also measured in inches of water column or Pascals. Static pressure is what you would feel if you placed your hand in a duct while airflow is occurring; you would sense pressure without any air movement. The Relationship Between Velocity Pressure and Static Pressure The relationship between velocity pressure and static pressure is a fundamental aspect of the Bernoulli’s principle, which describes how energy is conserved in flowing fluids. In HVAC systems, these pressures interact in a way that can be summarized through the total pressure equation: Total Pressure = Static Pressure + Velocity Pressure Total Pressure=Static Pressure+Velocity Pressure This equation shows that total pressure in a duct system is the sum of static and velocity pressures.
