How AI will affect your career as a Software Engineer. Here is a really interesting 5 minute read from Ryan Peterman, with some great advice for Software Engineers. Some context - The buzz around Devin, an AI capable of solving 13.86% of Github issues autonomously, has ignited discussions on AI's role in software engineering. This development mirrors the gradual automation seen in autonomous driving, suggesting a future where AI handles progressively complex coding tasks. Software engineers should focus on developing skills for higher ambiguity tasks, which are less prone to automation. Embracing AI tools is also crucial. Despite automation trends, the essence and demand for software engineering roles remain robust, promising a shift towards more creative and impactful work. Computer vision projects often progress slowly. Especially when you’re waiting for data to be gathered or annotated. Without a fully labeled set of images, it’s difficult for engineers to make progress. Yet high-quality annotations are time-consuming and costly. What if you could train a new model and add it to production in 6 weeks instead of 6 months? This is now possible with foundation models. Using either a publicly available model for your type of imagery or a self-supervised model trained on your in-house dataset, you can apply it to any task on similar imagery – even with a small number of labeled examples. You can have a proof of concept up and running before the labeling team has completed their job! And while they continue labeling, computer vision engineers can iterate on model development. These models are pretrained with self-supervision, which does not require manual annotations. They rely on labels inferred from the structure of the images. For example, augmented variants of the same image should generate a similar embedding. The model can then be finetuned with a small amount of labeled data using far fewer resources. If you’d like to enable your team to get a model to production in 6 weeks instead of 6 months, DM me to learn more. #MachineLearning #DeepLearning #ComputerVision
