💡#SEMPACT Project Spotlight 💡 Project Title: Transportation Risk and Resilience Metrics Principal Investigator: Catherine Lawson, University at Albany SEMPACT Priority Area: Inclusive Advanced Technology and  Climate Resilient Infrastructure ***Project Abstract*** This research, addressing the areas of Inclusive Advanced Technology Application and Climate Resilient Infrastructure, will evaluate a set of proof-of-concept transportation resilience measures to determine their utility and scalability as state and local performance measures. The research will review the latest scientific literature on risk and resilience measures to catalog methodologies scoring road network assets based on road segment attributes, hazard intersections, network centrality, and accessibility. Following the review, the research will test these measures utilizing a custom graph network composed of the OpenStreetMap (OSM), the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Road Inventory System (RIS), and the National Performance Management Research Dataset (NPMRDS) Traffic Messaging Channel (TMC) network. The research team will develop initial criticality measures by first intersecting the road network with floodplain maps, culvert and bridge locations, and other available road network metadata from RIS and OSM such as volume-to-capacity ratio and volume data. Next, the research team will run a variety of network centrality calculations as recommended by the literature. The initial criticality related attributes will then be added to the network centrality results to locate critical central segments. Finally, AVAIL aims to test the value of isochrone data for its use in transportation network resiliency measurement. AVAIL will create a baseline travel time matrix for a sub-network that can be quantified into accessibility measures. AVAIL will then run a series of facility failure scenarios where high risk critical segments are removed from the network to understand how differences between baseline and removal scenarios can be quantified and scaled for inclusion in a statewide resiliency measurement dataset. #TransportationResilience #ClimateResilientInfrastructure #OpenStreetMap (#OSM) #AVAIL

Happy to share that this week I joined the Earthrise Energy team as a Development Associate. Renewable energy project development really piqued my interested during my MBA, and after a year scratching the other professional itch I had in mind (consulting), I'm excited to be joining up a really fantastic team taking on a novel & ambitious strategy to get more clean energy on the grid quickly. Earthrise is buying natural gas peaker plants in the PJM & MISO territories and using the surplus interconnection (the volume of electricity that *could* be sent to the grid from that site but is only used a handful of times a year to run A/C's on the hottest summer days and other peak load events) to build big utility-scale solar & storage projects, bypassing the slow and irksome interconnection queues facing most greenfield developers. This novel strategy, along with the overly generous and supportive mentorship of Rob Kalbouss (who is now my boss) throughout my job search, convinced me this was the next great place to call home. I also hope that our potential success with this approach yields lessons about how to build broader community & political support for climate action & clean energy -- critical given the recent seismic electoral shift. The messaging on climate isn't winning, but in many ways the solutions are. Let's all be humble in how to continue the momentum in a much more challenging federal political landscape in the years to come. I pursued this next job opportunity with a different strategy in the past, in that I didn't bother applying to a single job where I didn't already have a strong connection & relationship. I know this is incredibly annoying standard fare job search advice, but I will never do anything differently going forward.
