It's very easy to think about the cost associated with repairing a bad camera or microphone. - Hardware repair cost - Shipping for repair - Service dispatch charge of a technician It's a little harder to think of the soft costs. - Time confirming the issue - Your teams time on the phone finding support - Loss productivity with the non functioning technology It's even harder to think of the opportunity costs. - Loss of a potential sale - Loss of a potential investor - Loss of a new hire Make the conversation around the real cost to the business when technology fails, not just the cost to repair the technology!

I have a call with PE-backed automated equipment manufacturer. I’ll be explaining that the person they want to hire doesn’t exist. This most likely won’t go over smoothly at first…But The reason so many companies engage our firm is because we hire the right people. The process starts by having realistic expectations. A job description that outlines two jobs, melded into one (which I received) is not the right path. This wastes their time, my time, and any prospective candidate’s time. As a consultant, it’s my job to do just that: Consult and advise from a place of expertise. They may tell me to take a hike. That’s okay. But my guess is, by the end of our meeting they’ll have us working on two separate roles.
