Just 18 days into the job, I was handed a critical task: secure a quote for a major contract valued at over half a million dollars. The team was on the verge of working with a sub-contractor who offered a quote that would have resulted in only a 5% profit margin. They gave me this challenge to see what I was capable of. Determined to make an impact, I dove into the details and reached out to a different sub-contractor. After a thorough meeting to ensure we were on the same page, we crafted a plan that not only met the project's requirements but also significantly boosted our profit margin. The result? A remarkable 31% profit margin—a far cry from the original 5%. But what made this achievement even more memorable was the surprising coincidence—the quote number matched my badge number, 458. It felt like everything was falling into place for a reason! This experience, just 18 days into my role, taught me the importance of taking initiative, fostering clear communication, and thinking strategically. These skills continue to drive our team’s success in federal projects, construction, professional services, and beyond.

(C) A+ graders: - Confer with the captain, and lead a branch - Possess strong immunity to changing winds - Both strong IC and manager types needed here A graders: - Follow the branch lead, and manifest the idea - Future superstars B graders: - Carry out individual tasks - Through proper coaching and personal effort, can potentially move up to A grade C graders: - Spend time discussing peripheral problems because they are, in themselves, the problem - Suggestion: promptly show them the door. The last several weeks I have focused in South Carolina, while a colleague supported the greater Charlotte area. The last 2 days I spent in Charlotte, seeing field employees, foreman’s, and general foreman’s. The temperatures were brutal but the smiles and joy made every drop of sweat worth it. My employees are growing, promoting, and teaching others. They are sharing/teaching Flagger Force core values. I had two particularly employees excited to see me, they couldn’t wait to tell me they were recently promoted to Field Trainers. Both told me stories how nervous they were training the first ones. Their smiles could light up an arena. Secretly, I was cheering them on from the side lines but never told them I knew. Hearing it from them was more meaningful then telling them I already knew. They both thanked me for helping them to get to where they are but I had to remind them, it was all them. It was THEIR hard work, dedication, determination, and willing to grow and learn. It wasn’t me, it was ALL them. I just gave them the encouragement to believe in themselves. Sometimes we get lost in deadlines, meetings, trade shows, or daily tasks that we often forget the reason we became a leader. This week reminded me why I love what I do. I didn’t take any pictures or selfies as I wanted to be present and in the moment. I wanted each person to know I appreciate you for everything you are doing. It’s okay to thank your employees, it’s okay to tell them they are doing a good job. Remember how it feels when you hear it or don’t hear it. #flaggerforce #beagoodleader #teambuilding

I don't know exactly what year P & O Containers issued these note pads, but the impact of the lessons learned and modeled by many great mentors remain with many of us fortunate to have been shaped by that culture. For me, three decades ago I joined the team. "POSH" was coined by the founding company Peninsular and Orient Steam Navigation Company in the 1800's. On cruises between England and India, booking your state room "Port Outward, Starboard Home" assured you the cooling of tradewinds. We focused on being a "white glove" carrier, where service could be second to none. What culture and "service habits" have you carried through your career? How do you model best practices?
