Streptococcus pyogenes is a virulent pathogen causing problems in humans for quite some time. The development of penicillin was a big step in combating this common bacterial agent. Kevin Stinson, from the IPAC Canada Central South Ontario chapter, goes over the history of S. pyogenes from Ignaz Semmelweis all the way to the surges post COVID-19. This bacterium is not easy in it's classifications. It can transiently colonize one's throat, gastrointestinal tract and genitourinary tract, it can cause Strep throat, and all the way over to causing meningitis, necrotizing fasciitis and death. https://lnkd.in/gM78izjq

Bacteria as Biological Control Agents of Plant Diseases 🦠🌿🌾🌷 🧫Bacterial biocontrol agents use a great variety of mechanisms to protect plants from pathogen infections. ✳️BCA can interact directly with the pathogen through: 🔶secretion of antimicrobial compounds 🔶interfering with the pathogen virulence 🔶competing for nutrients and space. ✅synthesize and release metabolites such as: ❇️lipopeptides, ❇️bacteriocins, ❇️antibiotics, ❇️biosurfactants, ❇️cell-wall degrading enzymes ❇️microbial volatile compounds ❇️interfere with the quorum sensing (QS) system of the pathogens ❇️enzymatically degrade or inhibit the synthesis of signal molecules used to initiate infections.

Typhimurium induces cholesterol accumulation through SseJ to activate mTORC1, preventing autophagic clearance of bacteria. https://lnkd.in/etz5GYjP

MSM (methylsulfonylmethane): Loosens and helps expel fats from liver cells. Helps strengthen every cell inside the liver, making the organ less prone to attack from disease-causing bacteria and viruses. MSM wakes up a stagnant, sluggish liver, reduces toxic liver heat, and gently purges the liver of toxins in deep-seated areas. Also gently purges the gallbladder of small debris particles. Improves the immune system inside and around the liver. https://lnkd.in/gQZeQVi

DID YOU KNOW? Ethambutol is an antibiotic commonly used to treat tuberculosis (TB). While effective, one of its known side effects is its potential to cause vision problems, specifically optic neuropathy. This condition affects the optic nerve, leading to symptoms like: 1. Blurred vision: Difficulty seeing clearly. 2. Color blindness: Reduced ability to distinguish colors, particularly red and green. 3. Vision loss: In severe cases, permanent damage can occur, especially if treatment is not adjusted. The risk is higher with higher doses and prolonged use. Regular eye exams are recommended during treatment with ethambutol to detect any changes early. If vision problems occur, discontinuing the drug or adjusting the dose may be necessary to prevent further damage. #ethambutol #eyesight #eye #vision #sideeffect

Very excited to share with you our recent review exploring the role of the extracellular vesicles in the pathogenesis of Campylobacter jejuni. These small particles allow the quick, safe and specific delivery of diverse virulence factors in the environment of target cells and so seem to play a major role in the establishment of infection by C. jejuni ! If you want to read more about the subject, feel free to download the paper here ;) https://lnkd.in/gT4E6p5C

C-reactive protein was originally detected along with Streptococcus pneumoniae, the same bacteria that causes pneumonia. Early researchers thought it might be an invasive particle, but research now shows that CRP helps fight some bacterial infections - including Streptococcus pneumoniae. The “C” in C-reactive protein actually refers to the “capsular” polysaccharide (a type of carbohydrate) in Streptococcus pneumoniae, where the protein binds to help the immune system recognize and destroy it.
