OLD WORK RULE Number 1: Leadership is something bestowed upon you by the company or organization. It comes with the authority associated with your job title NEW WORK RULE Number 1: Leadership is everyone’s responsibility. You must help lead your team, regardless of your job title or level of authority. OLD WORK RULE Number 2: To advance in your career, you must do what’s expected of you according to your job description. NEW WORK RULE Number 2: To advance in your career, you should do whatever it takes to create value for your team and your organization, even if it’s not expected and even if it goes beyond your job description. What you do before you start a leadership role is critical to your success in the first 90 days and beyond. It’s tempting rely on what you know and what’s served you well before, but you risk jumping to the wrong conclusions and heading off in the wrong direction. https://bit.ly/400OxWK

Unsatisfied with your executive leadership role? The first thing that you have to do is to decide to *do* something. Otherwise, you're going to just sit there and grumble, robbing yourself of all your agency. Decide what you're going to be doing differently. You have an entire spectrum between changing the company entirely and leaving (and many more options in between). Stop waiting for things to spontaneously improve. They won't.

Leadership Leasons From The Driving Range - warning! Being a great leader is difficult and not for everyone yet far too many companies promote those who aren’t ready. Not only do they not succeed, but that decision also impacts many who work on that leader’s team, often inflicting expensive damage on the brand as well. Take a page out of what ski slopes do with their rating system or Bethpage Black Course (the most difficult of their five courses by far): clearly warn of the difficulty and whom should undertake the challenge. Bethpage doesn’t allow carts to further discourage many from playing. Make sure only those ready take on the leadership roles!

Steve Jobs on the most important job of a CEO “The greatest people are self-managing. They don’t need to be managed. Once they know what to do, they’ll go figure out how to do it… What they need is a common vision, and that’s what leadership is. Leadership is having a vision, being able to articulate that so the people around you can understand it, and getting consensus on a common vision.” Steve continues: “We wanted people who were insanely great at what they did… and the neatest thing that happens when you get a core group ten great people is that it becomes self-policing as to who they let into that group. So I consider the most important job of someone like myself is recruiting.” https://lnkd.in/gYjqUyRq

To be a great leader you need to be personable and strategic. Able to give your team the freedom to thrive in their job roles, while supporting them to be aspirational. This allows you to concentrate on the strategic elements required from leadership. Make it known they are a great team, whether you manage a small team or you’re in a corporate leadership position. A great team makes a great leader. Not the opposite

Ernest Shackleton and his crew aboard the Endurance faced unimaginable challenges. Trapped for months in the Arctic ice, forced to abandon their ship, yet against all odds, every single one of the 27 men survived. That kind of outcome requires tremendous leadership. But leadership comes at a cost. As Shackleton himself said: "Loneliness is the penalty of leadership, but the man who has to make the decisions is assisted greatly if he feels that there is no uncertainty in the minds of those who follow him." This lesson is crucial not only in extreme conditions but also in negotiation and team management. Whether negotiating deals, managing your team through challenges, or aligning everyone around a common goal, strong leadership is vital. In negotiation, leadership means balancing strength with flexibility to secure the best outcome. And in managing a team, it’s about ensuring that your team has absolute confidence in your vision and direction, especially during critical decisions. As a leader, can you inspire both sides of the table in negotiations while maintaining the trust of your team? Are you able to manage conflicting interests without wavering in your leadership? Are you that kind of leader? Book Recommendation: Endurance by Alfred Lansing #Leadership #Negotiation #TheGapPartnership
