Tech has talent, but does it know how to monetize? I once told a manager I respect deeply when I joined her team (I still think of her as one if not the best manager I've had): “You have very talented people on your team, but it’s my estimation almost none of them have ever had the responsibility of being handed a certain amount of money and being asked for a return on it.” She agreed. The tech industry is full of creative, talented individuals building groundbreaking products. But here’s the reality: many of these people have never had to make money. They excel at innovation and growth, but may lack experience in delivering profitability. If you're leading a tech team or building your own startup, make sure to include people who know how to drive real ROI. Innovation + profitability is harder of a balance many might think, and having both perspectives can be helpful for creating a solid long-term, sustainable strategy. PS. "I don't know what the team is developing or when it will be ready. Am I wasting money?” Do you ask yourself this question? It’s another soundbite we regularly hear when we’re talking to potential clients. Founders will often engage developers or whole tech teams and lack the ability to understand what it is they’re doing or if the agreed goals are realistic. Development will start with the best intentions, but Scryla often gets involved when the project becomes heavily delayed. And the delay is usually because of too much optimism, or because the founders didn't know what they didn't know. This is what we’d do if you brought us in to get your project moving again: Align tech with business goals: We’d make sure what you're paying for ties directly to clear business outcomes. We’d review whether current deliverables are slowing down or speeding up growth. Set realistic goals: We’d evaluate your roadmap to confirm that the goals you’ve set are achievable. We’d work with you to adjust them if we needed to, so we avoid over-optimism. Increase transparency: We’d establish clear reporting and use metrics to track progress, making tech work visible and understandable. Audit for efficiency: We’d review the tech stack, processes, and costs to identify inefficiencies, tech debt, or unnecessary expenses. Improve communication: We’d translate tech jargon into ‘what it means for the business’ terms and bridge the gap between the founder and development team. Prioritise core features: We’d reassess whether engineers are focused on essential features that drive value or wasting time on non-essentials. Evaluate team structure: We’d assess if the team has the right skills and consider reallocating resources if needed.
