Yesterday, I learned about a pioneering new initiative that truly represents #levellingup. Anglia Ruskin University now offers a Medical Doctor degree apprenticeship "for aspiring medical doctors who may not have otherwise gone to medical school." As it's a Level 7 apprenticeship, its funding may be at risk, but what better way is there to spend public money than on improving social mobility? This initiative is a testament to policy-driven decision-making aimed at enhancing social mobility. The candidate selection for the current cohort champions diversity and inclusion in terms of gender, ethnicity, and those from disadvantaged backgrounds, recognising that these characteristics often impact the ability to access degrees. The course is designed to break down barriers and provide opportunities for all. In my opinion, losing the term "levelling up" was a mistake, as it has never been more relevant and thanks to the efforts of the previous government, now has a widely understood meaning. This initiative is a shining example of what is possible, although it will not be without challenges. Social background should not be a barrier to social mobility, a concept which arguably contributed to Trump's re-election in the United States. Enriched by diversity, the belief in the "American Dream" - the idea that anyone can achieve success through hard work and determination - provides outcomes of better equality and economic prosperity. If you want to improve recruitment and retention within your organisation, reaching this untapped talent by switching to skills based hiring is a great place to start. An important report. Glad it centers on unequal access and the privileged learning and employability outcomes which accrue only to students at select HEIs.

Gosh I wish we'd stop telling young people to choose degrees based on 'passion'. A tiny proportion of people are lucky enough to earn money doing something they're passionate about. For the rest of us, we're fortunate if we earn money doing something that interests us. We set young people up to have such skewed expectations of work telling them to follow their 'passion'. It's enough if they follow their interests and the employment market. #education #university #employment https://lnkd.in/gDGPQtmE

In alignment with the broader goals of boosting economic mobility, advancing racial equity, and scaling innovative and effective solutions for individuals affected by systemic barriers, Felton Institute’s pioneering initiative, launched in January 2023, aims to empower first-generation, non-traditional college students, and immigrant apprentices within the Early Childhood Education (ECE) sector. This groundbreaking effort, known as the Workforce Development and Success initiative, provides comprehensive support services tailored to the unique needs of this workforce, specifically targeting monolingual Latinas. At the core of this initiative lies ECE REACH (Early Care and Education, Realizing Employment and Creating Hope), an Early Childhood Apprenticeship Program developed in collaboration with Felton Institute, Mission Economic Development Agency, Foothill College, and EDvance College. Recognizing the urgent need to eliminate systemic barriers, many of which are deeply rooted, Felton Institute advocates for bold and outside of the box approaches through this collective impact workforce development initiative. The program's objectives are twofold: to address the early childhood educator crisis in San Francisco County by creating a new pipeline of trained educators and to support the existing workforce through education and career advancement opportunities. Additionally, Felton Institute is committed to ensuring that its ECE programs continue to effectively meet the linguistic and cultural needs of the children we serve by offering education and employment opportunities to individuals from the same communities. This approach aims to affirm their identities and promote a sense of belonging. #representationmatters #workforcedevelopment #apprenticeships #feltoninstitute To learn more about our program, click here https://lnkd.in/dnupTvwq

New data reveals the highest number of #Wales's school leavers progressing straight into the labour market in 15 years. With a new wave of young people beginning to lay the foundations of their careers, it’s important to understand the future needs of the Welsh economy. The need for a digitally literate workforce is growing, with new data showing that the number of online job adverts asking for Microsoft Excel has doubled in the last 3 years in Wales. This was something Sophie was conscious of when she was at school. “I did an IT A-level as I know so many different jobs involve technology, and I wanted to make sure that I had the necessary skills employers are looking for.” She said. #AlternativesToUni #FutureSkills #FutureWorkforce #DigitalSkills #FutureOfWork #Apprenticeships https://buff.ly/3XzfxKb

As this The Wall Street Journal article points out, not being able to find a job after graduation is not just a U.S. phenomenon but is impacting developing economies too. The solution? Education is a fundamental right, and it's time we evolve policies to make higher secondary and college education more flexible and inclusive. Key reforms include: 1. Biannual Enrollment : Allow students to re-enroll twice a year to avoid long delays after personal interruptions. 2. Fee Waivers : Adopt fee waivers or prorated fees for those facing financial hardships, ensuring access without penalties. 3. Vocational Training : Integrate skill-based programs that prepare students for immediate employment post-graduation. 4. Teacher Employment : Expand opportunities for teachers by offering vocational courses and continuous professional development. 5. Industry Partnerships : Collaborate with industries for internships and apprenticeships to make students job-ready. These reforms will create a more inclusive and practical education system, benefiting students, educators, and the workforce. Let's push for change that aligns with the needs of today's society #EducationReform #InclusiveEducation #SkillDevelopment #Empowerment

Breaking the Link Between Background and Success: The Sutton Trust’s Roadmap for Social Mobility The Sutton Trust’s latest report, ‘Fair Opportunity for All,’ presents the urgency of breaking the socioeconomic barriers to success, exacerbated by the pandemic and the cost-of-living crisis; where "opportunity to succeed in Britain is still heavily shaped by socio economic background" It's not all about the rags to riches fairy tales, but can include people moving from the bottom of the income distribution to the middle for example someone whose parents worked in manual labour becoming a skilled tradesperson. Key recommendations include: 🧑🍼Early Years: Enhance access to funded early education and reform the Early Years Pupil Premium. 🎒Schools: Implement a national strategy to narrow the attainment gap and rebalance school funding towards areas of higher deprivation 🛠️Apprenticeships: Increase apprenticeship supply and support for disadvantaged youth. 🎓Higher Education: Strengthen access efforts and maintenance support for low-income students. 💼Workplace: Ban unpaid internships over 4 weeks and enforce the Socio-economic Duty clause. The Trust calls for immediate action to ensure fair opportunities for all, regardless of background. #SocialMobility #Education #Equality #SuttonTrust Do you agree? https://lnkd.in/e3i7CwbR
