As the future leaders of our generation, all children need good, nutritious food to grow and function. Yet, many children in the Baltimore region are hungry when they arrive to school, and many have not eaten a full meal since they left school the day before. According to Feeding America, 33% of children in Baltimore city are food insecure. Our food assistance programs and conferences, work to ensure that all children can have access to the nutritious food they need to achieve their full potential. I have several reactions to the recent (and very important) Oregon State Policy Analysis Lab report that shows a 9.2% increase in food insecurity in Oregon over a period ending in 2023. Hit the link below to see how you can help Blanchet House & Farm! 1. It underscores the 28% increase in meals served at Blanchet House & Farm in 2023 compared to 2022. 2. It underscores the record number of meals served at Blanchet House so far in 2024, up as much as 30% in some months compared to 2023. 3. The extraordinary increase of food insecurity in rural Oregon is important because as resource scarcity in those communities increases, people will seek resources in urban centers, which suggests greater numbers of people needing Blanchet House's services in 2025. We'll be ready! 4. Predicted cuts to SNAP benefits in the Farm Bill that will be passed by the new Congress will exacerbate the benefits cliff already affecting thousands of Oregonians, which will then further increase the need for Blanchet House's services in 2025. We'll be ready! 5. The projected increased need for food coupled with disruptions to the food chain that could result from labor impacts in agricultural and related sectors will require enhanced gleaning and food rescue efforts -- something Blanchet House is poised to do in support of our colleague food pantries and meal service organizations. Did you know nearly 7,000 children in Orange County, North Carolina are on free and reduced meals? That's 1 in 3 kids who can be considered food insecure. TABLE was founded in 2008 to help alleviate food insecurity among children living in Orange County by providing local kids with healthy, fresh food and nutrition education. We started serving 12 kids at one elementary school and have grown our programs to deliver food directly to the homes of 950 kids every week. Since 2008, TABLE has distributed over 2,880,000 healthy meals and snacks to local children. Through our food access and nutrition education programs, our goals are to improve children’s overall health; increase children’s knowledge of nutrition, positive attitudes toward healthy eating, and/or long-term healthy eating habits; ensure kids and families are engaged, involved, and feel dignified; and ensure kids have access to and eat sufficient nutritious food. Over the last year, TABLE has achieved some remarkable milestones including completing our Capital Campaign raising $3.25 million to purchase and renovate our new building, raising over $300k at our annual Empty Bowl Fundraiser - the most successful Empty Bowls ever, and moving into our new space where initially we will feed 1,000 kids with a goal to reach 3,000 children! As TABLE grows more everyday, TABLE is facing a challenge we have never seen in our history: a waitlist of over 300 kids and growing. We are living in a time where inflation is at its highest and it’s challenging to reach more donors. Sharing Newman's Own Foundation's Food Justice for Kids Prize. Up to $1M in total funding is available for nonprofits, public schools, and tribes working to advance food justice for children in the U.S. If your organization is working towards food justice for kids and you qualify, consider applying (application period closes June 11, 2024). In the United States, more than 1 in 6 children (13.4 million) live in households where they do not have enough nutritious food to eat or know where their next meal may come from. This rate is significantly higher for some populations. Increased funding for nutrition assistance programs during the pandemic led to a significant decrease in childhood hunger. In Michigan, nearly 12% of people face food insecurity, and many of our community members face barriers to accessing nutritious food. Food insecurity has soared over the past few years, making it more important than ever to create a future where our food system is equitable, sustainable, and equipped to meet southeast Michigan’s needs. At our foundation, we support a number of nonprofit organizations, including Fair Food Network, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan, Forgotten Harvest, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, and Make Food Not Waste, who are working to increase food access, destigmatized food insecurity, and provide education and resources so that people throughout our region can thrive. Join us in addressing food insecurity in Worcester County, MA. Over 70,000 individuals experience low to very low food security, leading to disrupted eating patterns and insufficient food intake caused by limited access to nutritious and diverse foods. Food security varies individually and may change over time, affecting overall well-being. Through our Food Is Medicine program, we've enrolled dozens of families, many of whom were unaware of available resources. This program has shown that varying degrees of food insecurity exist, highlighting a considerable demand for supplementary food provisions within our community. The Child Health Equity Center aims to enroll over 200 families in the program and assess its impact on food security, health outcomes, healthcare utilization, patient satisfaction, and parental mental health. Through funding and support, we can provide fresh food resources to families in need at the Children's Medical Center.
