We had very good discussions the last 2 days during the 4th European Lightweighting Conference in Liège. The topics were well chosen, the conference rooms were nice AND functional and the atmosphere was relaxed and productive. Thanks for organizing, Pierre, Anne, Jérôme, Romain and Catherine! Representatives from 12 nations from business (companies from different sectors), science (institutes and universities), associations and politics (ministries and the EU Commission) discussed how a climate-friendly industry can be created with the help of effective, lightweight products, the best materials, designs and manufacturing processes. Lightweight construction is a cross-sectional technology that reduces CO2 emissions, uses resources more efficiently, strengthens Europe's independence and is therefore not only environmentally friendly but also important for our economy. I had the honor to present and discuss the topics bio-inspired lightweight design of AWI and connected engineering of our spin-off Synera GmbH in the session “Advanced Simulation and digital Twins for lightweight structures” - together with Samson Cooper, Dassault Systemes, Michael Bruyneel, Scientific Director at GDTech, Martin Swab, CEO of 4aengineering Gmbh, Marie Jonsonn, and Rafael Cebolla from GoAhead Engineering. Next meeting (2025) will be organized by the Polish Government in the beautiful city of Krakow. A bit sooner we will have a nice conference on simulation in engineering in Bamberg, Germany (https://lnkd.in/ewJAZHTm) A very nicely summarized white paper on the value of lightweight engineering and resource efficiency is available here: https://lnkd.in/eZa-Ffw8

At ICLA symposium in Copenhagen I came across a fascinating principle in the German practice of managing changes on construction projects: "Der schlechte Preis bleibt schlecht und der gute Preis bleibt gut" – "The bad price remains bad, and the good price remains good." In the context of construction, this principle serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of meticulous initial cost estimation and contract negotiation. If an initial price is poorly negotiated or higher than anticipated, subsequent changes will not magically improve it. Conversely, a well-negotiated price continues to benefit the project, even amidst changes. This principle resonates deeply with me, not only in the realm of construction but also in life. It underscores the significance of responsibility of making well-thought-out decisions from the outset, whether it’s in project management, business strategies, or personal choices. Thanks to Wolfgang Breyer and Prof. Stefan Leupertz for bringing this to my attention! Thanks to Bruun & Hjejle Advokatpartnerselskab for being such perfect hosts and for connecting many amazing professionals whose perspectives enriched our discussions. Finally, I fell in love with Copenhagen, a true world capital of architecture! #ICLA2024 #ConstructionLaw #LegalTech #ClaimsManagement #lupa

The RedCabin Rail Interiors Awards are entering the next round. I'm looking forward to my work as a judge in this year’s panel and to the valuable dialogue with the other jury members. With my 25 years of design for mobility and my experience from over 20 years of zweigrad Design in my luggage, I will soon be making my way to the Innotrans fair in Berlin to look at as many entries as possible on site. This year there is another Red Cabin Rail Interiors Award, which I wholeheartedly support from my own experience. Far too often, when tendering public projects for the railways, the focus is purely on the purchase price. Joint research by the Verband der Bahnindustrie in Deutschland (VDB) e.V. (German Railway Industry Association) and McKinsey & Company has clearly shown that this approach is (not only) too short-sighted for a successful mobility transition. For modern public tendering (MEAT), life cycle costs and sustainability, as well as design and accessibility are important criteria for the long-term success of a project. By focussing on the price, product innovations are often excluded from the beginning, but these are essential for the mobility transition. That's why I'm particularly pleased about this year's new award “Visionary of the Year“, which recognises an individual who has demonstrated exceptional foresight, innovation, and leadership in their field. We need gamechangers for designing a sustainable future. Be brave, change the game! Apply quickly. The registration period ends soon…
🏆 Eyes on the prize... Last year's winners were presented with trophies designed by zweigrad Design, recognised for their outstanding innovations and invited to collaborate with industry peers and publications, so don't miss out! Read about last year's ceremony and all the fantastic innovations here: https://lnkd.in/eFeYRCUv The deadline is fast approaching so be sure to get your entries in quick! #RedCabin2024

This meeting marks the positive catalyst that will enable Onyx Design to offer the best design services in Africa. I can't wait to tell you more, but one thing i can tell you now for sure is that very soon African automotive startups won't have to travel to Europe, the USA and China to find the same services we're going to offer them in Africa at affordable prices. We'll be using the same cutting-edge technology that the world's leading automotive companies use in their design centers and industrial/technical facility. Little by little, the bird is making its nest. Now is the time to make the African automotive industry more productive, attractive, safe, profitable and competitive.
