Excited to announce the publication of our latest research on #sustainability and #circulareconomy trends within the #luxuryfashion industry in the UK! 🌍✨ Many thanks to my co-authors Aya Abdelmeguid, Mohamed Afy-Shararah, Konstantinos Salonitis from Cranfield University and Konstantinos Tsagarakis from Πολυτεχνείο Κρήτης - Technical University of Crete. It has been an excellent collaboration! Our study dives deep into how luxury fashion, with its emphasis on heritage, craftsmanship, art, design and exclusivity, plays a crucial role in shaping sustainable practices across the broader #fashion landscape. By analyzing data from 1115 companies in the “Apparel and Fashion” and “Textiles” industries, we identified five key topics influencing luxury fashion. While only 20% of the companies actively focus on sustainability, there's much work to be done to give circular economy the attention it deserves. In a world that's increasingly focused on sustainability, building a fully circular wardrobe is one of the most impactful steps you can take to reduce your environmental footprint. My journey in fashion began with founding Front Row UK, a rental platform that introduced me to the power of shared consumption. Buy it: For items you love and wear all the time, ownership makes sense. But even here, circular practices apply - keep your wardrobe size constant by selling or donating an item every time you buy a new one. Wear it once? Rent it: For those special occasions or trend pieces, renting is the way to go. It’s a circular option that maximises the utilisation of each item, reducing the need for new resources. Plus, many rental platforms now offer the option to purchase items if you fall in love with them after trying them out. Wear it often? Co-own it: For items you love but don't need to wear all the time, co-ownership is ideal, it is particularly great for those seasonal items as well. You get the benefits of ownership—without the hassle of full responsibility. Co-own it with others and access it for up to 10 weeks a year. And when you’re ready to move on, you can sell your share, often at a profit if the item appreciates in value. Cynthia and I wanted to make co-ownership as hassle-free as possible, so More Luxury Club provides insurance and maintenance - it's like ownership, but better. The last few years have seen a rise in circular practices within the luxury fashion industry. Think Gucci’s Circular Hub, Coach’s (Re)Loved exchange and upcycling programme, and Stella McCartney’s research into circular textiles and recycled/recyclable materials. Circularity in luxury store designs, however, is lagging behind. Paris, my home city, has always been synonymous with timeless elegance, a place where history meets innovation in every couture house and concept store. Like New York, Paris has had to navigate the shifting tides of consumer preferences, sustainability demands, and technological advancements. Both cities share a legacy of being at the forefront of fashion but must now adapt to remain relevant in a rapidly evolving global landscape. Adapta took part in a talk on reuse and circular fashion, alongside CrushON,Nona Source and CASA 93. It was an excellent opportunity to exchange innovative ideas and strengthen our commitment to more sustainable fashion.
