As highlighted in The Wall Street Journal, our team completed the largest 3D-printed commercial real estate project in U.S. history with @Walmart in Athens, Tenn., and we also walked away with invaluable insights. These lessons are already shaping how we approach future projects, allowing us to push boundaries and refine our processes. Every challenge and #innovation from this experience will drive us to create even more groundbreaking work in the #3DCP space, setting new standards for #commercialconstruction. #3DConcretePrinting #ConstructionInnovation #3DPrinting

I think any form of in-situ 3DCP of homes can't be built affordably. Too many incontrollable moving parts and materials formulation. However, offsite 3DCP printing of the components that go into building the homes can be affordable. Offsite printing can be more controllable and with DfAM and DfMA at the core, there're definitely gains in productivity and efficiency. BUT, many argue that this is not "true blue" 3D printing of homes.
The discussion on #3dprinting in relation to housing affordability has raised interest as well in NZ where I had the pleasure to this with Radio New Zealand host Jesse Mulligan to outline our research and the upcoming 3d printing houses design competition hosted by LUYTEN® and UNSW / UNSW Arts, Design & Architecture https://lnkd.in/gZ4jTkkR

#WhatsUp_at_Arch_Manu . I am excited to announce that I will be working as a Research Assistant on a Cooperative Research Centres Project (CRC-P) at UNSW for 3D-Printed Housing Solutions Research. This project embodies the robust partnership between Arch_Manu [ARC Centre for Next-Gen Architectural Manufacturing] and LUYTEN® . It aims to create innovative #workflows, software, and #fabrication systems/techniques to promote #sustainable and #functional #material utilization through the development of novel technologies and algorithms. . M. Hank Haeusler, the Arch_Manu director, and Zayad Motlib, the Centre's Computational Design Lead, will manage the methods and strategies. Alexander, Louis, M. Kyan and I, will be developing thoughts into actions. . #Arch_Manu #UNSW #AEC #3D_Print #Computational_Design #Research #Functions_Through_Geometry #DfMA #Manufacturing #Generative_Design #Integrated_Design

Today, at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia we presented an exciting experiment by 3D printing a full-scale coffee table using a cork-based mix. Working at a 1:1 scale allowed us to fully explore the potential of this sustainable material in real-world applications. It was fascinating to observe how the cork mix behaved during the printing process, revealing both its advantages and limitations. While the material offered promising qualities such as lightweight properties and natural aesthetic appeal, we also encountered some challenges related to structural stability and surface finish. This hands-on experience provided valuable insights into how cork could be utilized for larger-scale, functional objects, opening up possibilities for future innovations in sustainable design and architectural applications. At the 2023 Place Summit, Groundwork’s panel brought cutting-edge solutions to the forefront, tackling Northwest Arkansas’ housing crisis with innovative alternative building methods. Experts like Peter MacKeith, Dean of the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design, Zachary Mannheimer of Alquist 3D, and bj siegel, LEED AP, formerly of Juno discussed mass timber construction, 3D printing, and component-based design, highlighting their potential to transform housing affordability. These techniques not only cut costs and construction time but also offer sustainable options that can scale to meet the needs of our workforce. As Mannheimer aptly stated, "Housing is the problem everywhere we go. It doesn’t matter how cool your town is if you can’t find a place to live.” By prioritizing systematization and scalability, we can provide quality, affordable homes and meet the growing demand in our region. Swipe to learn key lessons from each presenter. #AffordableHousing #InnovativeBuilding #MassTimber #3DPrinting #WorkforceHousing #Sustainability
