ALPLA Group’s Post

PET instead of glass is a great choice for wine bottles! 🙌 You can save up to 89% in weight and 42% in carbon emissions. 🌱 Why carry heavy glass bottles when there are alternatives that look nearly identical and, according to blind tastings, don’t affect the taste? After all, the wine will be poured into a wine glass anyway – so why not choose a more climate-friendly packaging? 🍷 Learn more ▶️ http://spkl.io/6003fb9KW #FamilyOfPioneers #Sustainability #Packaging #SustainablePackaging #CircularEconomy #Recycling #PlasticIsFantastic #WineBottle #PET

“While PET bottles may seem like a sustainable option for wine packaging, they face significant challenges when it comes to preserving quality and honoring the rich tradition of winemaking. Sustainability must walk hand in hand with heritage and excellence.”

Pet is molecular permeable, wich means that small molecular (like O2, CO2, C2H6O, etc) can pass through its plastic surface. Nowadays PET bottles for alcoholic beverages solved the lost of alcohol with special receipt and barriers that avoid lost of CO2 and Alcohol. So PET is nowadays a great packaging solution. Now let's see if it can wins vs romantic Wine Glass Bottle lovers.

I’ll leave the reply I gave to Dayne’s comment as an actual separate comment… I know it might sound unconventional, but here are four reasons to consider #PET for alcoholic beverage #packaging: 1) Versatility: PET opens doors to new consumption occasions and venues where glass is banned—football stadiums, beaches, and music festivals. 🎤🏖️⚽️ 2) Emerging Trends: Spirit brands like Bacardi 🍹, Malibu 🥥, Fireball, 🔥 and artisanal beers in Eastern Europe are leading the way. PET is also being tested for young rapid rotation #wines like BlueBin in the US and Pirueta in Argentina. 3) Environmental Impact: Studies show #glass bottle production accounts for 29% of wine’s carbon footprint, compared to just 17% from harvesting grapes🍇 (search for Elsevier “Evaluation of the carbon footprint of the wine industry”). 4) Sustainability Preferences: New consumers value sustainable choices, even sacrificing traditional packaging attributes for eco-friendliness (search for ING “The sustainable food and beverage choices that don’t come ready-wrap”) . On a personal note, I love PET—it’s versatile, visually appealing, and honestly, makes me happy. 😊 Why not give it a try? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts! Cheers🥂 Elisa

Besides the fact that PET uses way less process temperatures, which means less energy, less CO2 and recycling happens, just like glass.

I strongly disagree. You just don't want to feel a PET bottle when you touch a better bottle of wine. Unless you are thinking about Tesco wines for 2euro. The other side - aesthetics: you can simply see it by looking at it. The release of plastic microparticles into liquids - that would be a bigger story here. Glass is 100% recyclable but PET bottles are already low-grade recyclate. The biggest advantages of PET bottles are course: transport and better durability in handling. Everybody in food industry are getting rid of plastic in food and replacing it everywhere, so I see no reason to go against the stream... Same as beer in a PET bottle - disgusting.

I disagree. Firstly, lightweight is not an advantage as the adverse counter-offsets of the full LCA of the replacement plastic far outweighs the minimal mass differentials. Secondly, consumers have a strong preference for glass bottles over plastic bottles. Wine in plastic bottles is disgusting in my view. Finally, the cumulative adverse impacts of plastic bottles to human health is simply unacceptable. The plastic packaging sales pitch as ‘climate-friendly’ is misleading & is a clear example of green washing.

I agree Dayne Steggles, this is another case of ‘carbon tunnel vision’ based on LCA using historic energy data. As we move to decarbonise the grid recycled and ideally reused glass is preferable to the cumulative adverse impacts of plastic bottles to human health (water, wildlife and nature) impacts that are simply unacceptable.

Great point, ALPLA Group! Choosing PET over glass for wine bottles is a smart move for sustainability. It's all about finding innovative solutions that address real-world challenges. This shift not only reduces weight and emissions but also opens up new opportunities in packaging. Cheers to making a positive impact!
